I'm bipolar and I got the distinct feeling from my new therapist I wouldn't beable to have this surgery. Just the way she was asking questions. Is that true?

I don't mean to pry but what type of questions was she asking? When you have your pysc. eval. they ask some crazy questions.

She just remarked I was on a lot of meds and asked when I was going to have surgery. She gave me a look like that ain't happening. Asked if I'd had my psych eval done, they do it at this office. Asked who my surgeon was. Made me anxious. I had a psych eval at the bariatric center I was at before I switched, just waiting on records to come over.

My understanding is that if you have uncontrolled psych issues that they will not do the procedure. How under control and stable has your bi-polar symptoms etc been? (you dont have to answer but I am thinking this is what they will look like, although I do not know your surgeon's requirements) How strong are you swings? Bi-polar, as you know, is very serious and with the possiblity of depression causing suicide mixed with the serious depression many suffer after surgery and the life changes one has to make, it is understandable their concerns. You just might need to advocate strongly for yourself and show documentation of some kind that you have your bi-polar managed and you have a strong support system. Have you a plan for what you do when you cycle etc? A kind of living will that allows others to force you to take meds etc if you really cycle and stop taking meds etc? Maybe do some research (if you have not already) on stuff like that to help relieve your doctors concerns. But honestly you do not know yet what their stance is, so maybe your first step is to just ask them, do not be shy about it and advocate for your answers so you know what you will need to do next.

I am no expert in Bi-polar but it is my profession (mental health anyway) and have studied some about this, but you are the expert about yourself so keep that in mind when you speak to your doctor.

good luck and keep us posted.

Like someone else, the biggest thing they're looking for is stabilized conditions, if you do have any mental health issues. Are you currently in therapy? You are seeing a psych for medication management to treat your symptoms, so that's a plus. Keep us posted!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
