My first consult!

Recommended Posts

:clap2: My name is Laura and I live in Victoria, BC and I have my consult booked with Dr. Mumford on Thursday! Anyone have any comments about Dr. Mumford? Now I'm scared...and I'm a nurse (sheesh!)

Cheers,

Laura

Laura welcome

I know some Dr Coburn and Dr Mumford patients, they seem to love their surgeons. I would write down all your questions prior to the appt and make sure you are comfortable with the surgeon. You are going to have a long relationship with this person. If you aren't completly happy with the answers, the clinic and the surgeon remember there are always other clinics you can visit too.

If I was doing this all over again I would ask the following (yes some are a little negative but I am a big believer in being prepared)

Who does the fills and what is the criteria for fills

What type of post op support does the clinic offer (nutritionist, fitness, counselling etc)

How many bands they have done

What is their percentage of complications over all

What type of complications they have dealt with

If you have a complication who pays to repair it you or them (not uncommon for the surgeon to donate their time but you pay the other staff for a greatly reduced rate)

If the band doesn't work out for you (ie you body reacts badly to the material or you just can't get it) what other options do they offer you

Do they do other weight loss surgerical options and what would it be like to have one done and exactly what other options do they off (RNY, DS, VBG, Sleeve etc)

Beyond that all questions are fair game, but I think the above are things that in hindsight I would have like to know before I was banded 5 years ago.

Welcome Laura!!!!

BTW, Neenaugh, stay calm, Dr. M. is allowed to take on other patients, even though we know you 'heart' him the most.

Neenagh,

I understand why you 'heart' Dr. Mumford, and I only got to talk to him on the phone (just a few minutes ago)! You can be his main 'squeeze' (ha, ha, what a riot I am), but could I just borrow him for an hour or so ?

Hi Laura, I am in Victoria too. I hope you are doing well. Making a decision can be the hardest part. Have you got your date and/or surgeon yet?

Hi Bandiva,

Thanks for your post. No, I am still working it out. I have asked for a referral to Dr. Leung in Surrey and hope to hear something in the next week or so. I got a referral to Dr. Amson...April 1st...2008! I like Dr. M. in Toronto (don't tell Neenagh), but I am leaning towards Mexico (maybe Dr. Ortiz - he looks like a television star in his picture, or Dr. Aceves). I am hoping that I can have my band done in late May.

Cheers (and congrats on making your first goal!)

Laura

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
