Hello

I just joined here. I am looking for a support group. I am having my surgery on Monday and I am getting a little nervous. Not about the surgery itself, I have a wonderful surgeon, but mostly about everything after.

Is anyone in Missouri?

Thank you. I don't get out much except in computerland so I was hoping to find a great support group online and I ran across this one completely by accident. Must mean I am supposed to be here :-)

That is why I am doing it. I have a 16 year old daughter and she always wants me to go do things with her and I can't walk to go do them. When the dietian did our class she told us to set goals for 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year. After talking it over with my girl, I set my goals as, 1 month- lose enough (about 35 lbs) to be able to get on our treadmill again, 3 months- go dancing with her on New Years Eve, 6 months- take her to the amusement park without a wheelchair and actually get to ride the rides, and 1 year- go back to Hawaii without a wheelchair and hike up DiamondHead with her. The last one may be a little too optimistic but both she and I would settle for the first part of it. LoL And I would love to be able to snorkel or scuba dive there. None of these things have I been able to do in years. So I am staying positive and keeping the faith that this will be the life changing experience I am praying for.

Just 8 more hours to go! Surprisingly a lot of my nervousness has subsided, that may change by morning lol, we'll see. Say a little prayer for a stranger if you would please. :-)

Thanks ev1 for the comments and I will talk to y'all when I am out of recovery and awake.

Good Morning Y'all.

Day 2 after surgery and all is going well!

Was up just a couple of hours after surgery and walked quite a ways. Have had some pain but it is being managed quite nicely by the "dope on a rope" as my dietcian called it lol, a patient controlled Dilaudid pump.

They have had me attempting to eat/drink 4-6 oz. of Water, broth, or diluted cranberry juice an hour, which has been very hard to do because I feel very full. This hospital has the best broth I have ever tasted though.

In fact, including the food, the staff, and the accomodations made for both me and my family, I can easily understand why this hospital, University of Missouri Hospital, and the Bariatric Center are among the top on the list of Centers of Excellence.

I am doing my breathing exercises to prevent pnuemonia and my "feet flap" exercises to prevent blood clots every hour as directed. My blood pressure and blood sugar have both been doing good. The catheter is a little bothersome and uncomfortable as is the gas, but I was told the catheter will be removed today. YAY!

Normally they would send me home today, and the nurses kept saying I was going, but according to the surgical fellow who assists my surgeon Dr. De La Torre, even though everything went excellent and I am doing so great, because I live several hours from the hospital he is not sending me home for at least another day.

Gotta go now they just came in to take blood. But I will be back later.

And thank you all for the prayers and good wishes, they really did help!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
