I've heard that aside from walking, you should lift weights to tone and help avoid any loose skin if possible. Does anyone know anything about this? I would like examples of what type of exercises to do. I know absolutely nothing about lifting weights.

I work out at a gym which is. Good place to start because you can usually get some free training when you start. Weight machines and free weights tone the underlying muscles beneath your skin as long as you do them at least 3-4 times weekly and with enough repetitions and sets of exercise. As you build tone in your muscles it helps increase your metabolism eventually because muscle burns more calories than fat. Loose skin can be helped somewhat as you tone but how much depends on how large you are to begin with, how old you are and how much you exercise. If you are very large you will have more loose skin and toning will not rid you of all of it especially on the abdomen. Your most promising bet is being younger as skin is more resilent and toning and building muscle will show more. You should join a gym even the YMCA and get someone to walk around and show you how to use weights and machines and if you can afford some training even for a couple of sessions that will give you more confidence.

Genetics plays a huge part in skin elasticity as well....how big you were, how long you were that big, smoking. There are a ton of variables. Sadly, you can't tone skin, but as mentioned above, you can tone what's under it which can help!

Wow! Boy do I know something about this! Yes! Lift weights a min of 3 times a week. If you can afford a trainer please invest in the money! I have not had any cosmetic surgery!

Yes, I've researched the loose skin saga for over ten years...it appears genetics is the main component. I've seen people do every trick, gadget, cream, exercise, weight, etc, but still had loose skin... I think the more we accept it and stop stressing it (me included, I'm guilty too) and just realize that we are the cause of it and this surgery will save our lives. I'd rather be alive with baggy skin than deceased with fat rolls!

Genetics plays a roll but let's not fool ourselves. A lot of hard work will eliminate a lot of it. If I didn't walk the walk, I wouldn't say a word. Yes replace the fat with muscle and you will be amazed. It won't be perfect but you will love your body ad be healthier! Remember 1 lbs of muscle will burn 25 times more calories and in my opinion muscle looks so much better than fat.

Thank you for the advice. I know that genetics has a lot to do with it but if I can help the situation at all, I will try my hardest. I'm only 6 weeks out and would like to start now.

Yes I have. Before surgery all I did was cardio. So treadmill, elliptical, dance and spin (which I love) but I know I need to do more weight training now. So time to start figuring out what I'm doing! Thanks got the inspiration. The fact that you are now a trainer is awesome.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
