I agree you have to be proactive and make as many of the phone calls you can

At each appointment find out why you have to do next, then find out what they have to do next and ask for a timeline for each

I you do hear within that timeline call and inquire

You have to be your own advocate

I had talked with my pcp about 5 years when I first thought about doing this. I finally made the decision to go through with it after going to a seminar in April. Met with the surgeon who does the surgery. Once you do the original consult with the surgeon they will set you up with nutrition classes. At that point they asked me to call my doctors office and have them fax my medical history. Thats it. No reference needed. It was already in the files that I wanted/need to do this. I wish you luck. I am 27 and I agree that at your age it will help you live a better life. Sending you good vibes.

I had to have a referral because I am with an HMO. PCP referred me to dietician and I did those classes and that location handled all of the pre-surgery requirements (like EKG) up to the point of seeing the surgeon and endoscopy. I had to do the seminar before 6 month of classes was up then they set up the appointment with surgeon, but he would not see me until the diet classes were complete. Then I saw surgeon, he approved me and scheduled me for endooscopy and pre-op blood work. I did not need sleep study etc. Then after results of endoscopy and labs came back my paperwork was submitted to insurance and then it was just wait. Then it was approved I had pre-op labs and surgery scheduled. That was about a month to 6 weeks later, due to dr going on vacation and my daughter getting married.

Biggest thing is advocate for yourself, as your own insurance what they require and if your surgeon has an patient insurance cooridnator (if a good one) then make use of them and dont be afaid to call them often if needed. Surgeon also has his own requirements, so helpful to know those too.

Good Luck!

I think it depends on your insurance. I called mine and found out I have to do a 3 month nutrition program. I am definitely 100 plus pounds overweight and am tired of my health deteriorating. I am 33 and weigh 235 and only 5' 4". I think my kids feel ashamed of me sometimes too:-( I would also like to be able to exercise without all the accompanying pain!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
