shrinkingDEE 60 Posted August 4, 2012 Has anyone had their blood sugar's not come down after surgery.Mine are not high around 130 - 180. My doctor is not worried just wondering if this is common. And how lone be for your drain hole stop leaking (sorry about the gross drain hole part) I was pre diabetic prior to surgery. But the first 3 days after surgery I needed insulin because my sugar was 200+ & about the drain mines leaked for about 4-5 days. Then had it removed a week after surgery. Stacey Dayonne 69 Posted August 4, 2012 My drain never leaked, I had it out the day I came home. My sugars went up for about a week right after and then stabilized. I'm an insulin dependent diabetic but my insulins injections went from 5 a day to
Tracym1107 47 Posted August 4, 2012 My blood sugars went up extremely high after surgery. I had to go on an insulin drip in the hospital. Stayed elevated for about the first week. I'm type 1 so I will always be on insulin. However, I'm in a normal range now and and usually only take my slow release insulin....rarely require any fast acting so it does get better! lotstolose 23 Posted August 5, 2012 Your sugars were high prob dut to the lactose ringers you had in your IV. They have dextrose in them( sugar). i am type one and take only 20 units of lantus daily now i was at 100units a day and now with no meal coverage. It does get better and as you lose more weight the less insulin you will need. 1 Tracym1107 reacted to this
Tracym1107 47 Posted August 5, 2012 Right after the surgery I went into diabetic ketoacidosis. I don't remember anything for the first 36 hours and they tell me I'm lucky to be alive. I was in ICU for my entire hospital stay. But my insulin requirements have dropped and they expect them to drop more. I rarely take any fast acting (novalog) prior to meals anymore! Just take 36 units of levimer now. Just like you....down from 100 units or more!
PaulB 346 Posted August 5, 2012 Update blood sugars are coming down now have to watch they don't go low. Drain hole is drying up to everything the Doctor said would happen is happening. Maybe Doctors do know a thing or two 1 my3stars reacted to this
Tracym1107 47 Posted August 5, 2012 That's great news!!! I have to agree with you...I was doubting my doctor because my weight wasn't coming down. He kept telling me it was due to the complications after surgery but I didn't believe him....thought I was the only person that surgery didn't work for. Now, all of a sudden I am dropping weight like crazy!! Guess they know more than me! 1 Sunflwr76 reacted to this
