So I was scheduled to have surgery in 5 days. I get a phone call from nurse saying they have to delay my surgery cuz of my A1C is too high. I can understand it's for safety reasons but now in don't know how long I am delayed for. Has any one else gone through this????

They didn't delay mine and should have. My A1c was extremely high and it caused me to go into diabetic ketoacidosis. I was seriously close to not making it and was in ICU for 3 nights. I'm not trying to scare you but it is for the best. Hopefully they can make some changes to your insulin and you can have the surgery soon. Keeping you in my thoughts!

Well my original date was Aug 7 but delayed because my A1C was 11.6 and by Sept 22 I brought it down to 8.6 got another surgery date of Nov 27 but two weeks ago I was asked if I would like to go on Oct 30 so I took it.. I walked out of the hospital no longer on any diabetic medications... No more pills and no more insulin.... Yeah

that is so awesome

my blood sugars have been running high for the past several weeks, I am working hard these next few days to get it lower before surgery on Wednesday. My prayer is that this surgery eliminates or greatly reduces my need for insulin. I am so happy for you, I also pray that I don't get delayed because of the high sugars. But I would have to understand it would be for my own good,

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
