I had surgery on a Monday and wasn't allowed anything to actually drink until Tuesday. They did give my some sponges on a stick (lol best way I could discribe it) to swab my mouth on Monday but I couldn't actually swallow. And I wasn't ever allowed ice chips :(

Joe-- we were at the same hospital so your answer would be lol...

Surgery will take 2 hours, you will then be given swabs to wet your mouth, for 24 hours. Like I had my surg 8 am Tuesday I was out by 10 woke up 12, and drank Wednesday around 4ish. The swabs helps, and the pain meds keep you in and out so it's really not bad. Buuuut the cath comes out then you can drink, from there they expect you to be going to the. Bathroom by yourself. I was discharged Thursday by 11.

I am doing well, except this drain is kicking my butt. Ugh too much pain lol but it comes out Friday. Yours is August 3, so your on the liquid diet now right??? After surgery pointers***** get up and walk, if you don't want to, the nurses won't make you, but it's truly for the best.

Wow! I was given fluids after I was awake and didnt have a cath, or a drain. All must be the docs preferences.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
