Hi <img src='http://www.bariatricpal.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> I'm not expected to have surgery till December' date=' but I recently quit smoking specifically for the surgery. My surgeon requires no smoking for six weeks prior to surgery, but I thought I'd get a head start. My surgeon always checks for nicotine levels in lab tests, so I knew I couldn't lie lol. I found Chantix to be very helpful.[/quote']

What chantix ??

I go see my doctor on the 10th. I wanted to know what you guys have been told about smoking, or what are your opinions on smoking after surgery?

I'm an ex smoker so I know how tough quitting can be. Many doctors test for nicotine pre-op and some will not perform the surgery if your test comes back positive. Smoking stimulates the production of gastric juices that can irritate the lining of the pouch and result in ulcers in the pouch and the small intestine. So smoking post-op is even riskier than it is pre-op. You'll probably never have a better reason or opportunity for quitting!!

What about dipping? Can you do that after surgery? Because I dip and I have a feeling it's going to make me gag after I have the surgery.

I smoked right up until the day before surgery, luckily my doctor didn't test for it. I gotta tell you though, I ended up being readmitted to the hospital the day after I got home because of pneumonia and I just gotta wonder how much of that could have been caused by my smoking. I have not started again and do not intend to, it's been 22 days and although I sometimes crave one, I believe it would make me sicker than a dog! I am done with it forever !! Good luck to anyone trying to quit - stay strong!

I tried Chantix a long time ago. For me it was not good. I had bad nightmares which I have never had before. It gave me headaches and not to mention Ins didn't cover it. And it's really exspensive. ( I know cigs are too). I've been wearing the patch for about a month and using my e-cig. I find mine is more of a mental than a physical issue. I still smoke a cig once in awhile ( I know bad). I also know that my Dr doesn't do any nicotine testing.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
