I go see my doctor on the 10th. I wanted to know what you guys have been told about smoking, or what are your opinions on smoking after surgery?

Hi :) I'm not expected to have surgery till December, but I recently quit smoking specifically for the surgery. My surgeon requires no smoking for six weeks prior to surgery, but I thought I'd get a head start. My surgeon always checks for nicotine levels in lab tests, so I knew I couldn't lie lol. I found Chantix to be very helpful.

My surgeon checks the nicotine levels as well and well not operate on someone who still smokes, says the complication rate is so much higher that it's just not safe....

My surgeon told me that they will not do the surgery if someone has been smoking within 6 months of the surgery and that you should never smoke ever again.

my surgeon requires you to quit smoking 2 weeks before surgery. I did exactly as he asked and quit smoking. I also had pre-cancer cells in my stomach when I had my endoscopy done. Those cells are the likely result of smoking and can reverse them selves if I quit. I have been smoke free for almost 4 months now - wooohooo best thing I ever done !!!

I quit before surgery had too or they wouldn't do it. And for afterwards of coarse the surgeon doesn't want u smoking so I asked my family dr about it and of coarse she said don't do it I made it this far but if I were to start back up at least wait a month for everything to heal. Unfortunately didn't wait that long and have been. But plan on stopping again. It's summer time and every has parties I couldn't eat or drink so I wound up smoking not a good excuse but i was getting myself down. Good luck hope u can quit for good! Know it's tough!

I never quit. I tried but couldn't, when asked by my surgeon I told him I was on nicotine patch. I'm 7weeks out and I'm still smoking. I promised myself I'd quit for my 35th birthday 11/03/12

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
