Optifast Advice Needed

Recommended Posts

Ok my dr requires Optifast for 2 weeks prior to surgery plus I am STRONGLY encouraged to lose 35-45 lbs before surgery. I was considering doing an extra week to attain the wt loss needed. My question is they make me buy theirs for 150 per week is this a good price or can I get my extra week for less money? Like on Amazon? And if so what exactly do I need for a week how many Protein cartons or bars. The optifast site will give no info because they want you to pay a clinic. Thanks

Ps my plan is as follows:

Step 1 Data entry everything I eat being brutally honest and writing down EVERYTHING Using myfitnesspal Time limit: August 14,2012

Step 2 will be to eliminate the sweets and keep track and decrease carbs. Time limit 8/14-21

Step 3 low carb no sweets 8/14-9/4 Step three if I haven't lost at least 25 lbs by sept 4th do an extra week of optifast. Time limit: if needed start 9/4

Step 4 optifast 2 weeks prior to surgery. Time limit 9/11-24

Step 5 surgery! 9/25/12

I was in opti fast for 3 months. There is actually a few people on eBay that sells them wayyyy cheaper. Just make sure they check the expiration date.

The Optifast is sold in my surgeon's office for $80 per case. It isn't bad tasting, either! My favorite thing is to put a french vanilla Optifast into a cup of black coffee, with one Sweet & Low. Yum!

I had to purchase something similar from my surgeons office. We were required to eat 4 bars, Soups or shakes per day. A two week supply was about $150. You picked which ones you wanted. I choose bars and shakes.< /p>

Rabrijuno - my doc said to use 3 a day of the small 8 oz cartons of pre-mixed drink. Later I learned, from the nurse in his office, that they used to say 5 per day; however, people were doing that AND cheating and that was too much so the goal of liver shrinkage wasn't being accomplished. I guess they figure people are likely to cheat a little so keeping at 3 helps to somewhat allow for it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
