New Here, Only 4 Days Until My Surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi all! Want to do a quick intro, I just found this site tonight.

Like many of you, I have been battling weight my entire adult life and am happy that the battle, although it won't be over, will finally have some results.

In high school, I was not overweight, but I was very self-conscious about my body. I wore huge over sized shirts to hide myself, which made me look a lot heavier than I was because of, well, let's say I was heavy up top. I had reduction surgery to take care of that in 2008.

I was a size 3 at 5'1 and felt huge. I started my first real diet at age 17 and have battled my weight ever since. I always say that I never really had issues with weight until I started dieting.

Anyway, my health has gone downhill in the last several years. I am 37 years old and without medication, my triglycerides stay close to 500. I have sleep apnea and diabetes. On top of it all, I have a connective tissue disorder called Ehlers Danlos which causes pain and arthritis all over my body. Taking the weight off should help all of these issues.

I am currently on my 5 day clear liquid pre-op diet. I am ending day 2 and have my surgery scheduled for Tuesday which is only 4 days away. I am so excited for this change in my life and look forward to reading about and speaking with others on the same path.

Thanks!

Hi Tami,

I am 7 weeks post op and there's not a day where I don't give thanks for having made the decision to have the bypass surgery. I can identify with all you have written and can tell you that life is about to turn around for you. Be happy, be positive and be prepared for life as you always hoped it would be. A useful book is Life After Gastric Bypass. Buy it, read it and keep it at hand as it will help so much.

I look forward to reading of your journey and new life.

I am 11 days post op and I told my husband and other ask me a month out about how I felt about the decision I made about surgery. I can honestly say sooner than that everything is going fine and no issues. I am down 17 pounds so far and that really makes me smile. But the people in the hospiltal got on my nerves because you don't get to sleep because you have breathing treatment, blood work, meds, and doctor visits. I stoped having pain two days before I left hospital. you will do fine and good luck. Welcome

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
