Scared Of Missing Food

Recommended Posts

This sounds ridiculous but I am terrified of missing food after surgery. I am tore between being mentally ready for this change and being sad about not having certain things ever again. Anyone else feeling this way or had these feelings before surgery? I just need to know km not crazy!

I have had those feelings too. For me I mourned my food losses after surgery. I used to smell my families food just to help get over it. Thankfully those feelings are better now. Some of the foods I thought I would miss I don't. I was very surprised by that too. Good luck to you.

I'm feeling a lil like that too...there are things I will miss dearly and I am hoping that if I ever try them after surgery, that I get a vicious dump episode right after to teach me a lesson!

I think it's normal to be apprehensive and grieve food. It's been a big part of your life and suddenly something's are gone. When I start to feel sad, I think about how sad it would be for my three children to go through life without a Mom. That is more powerful to me than anything. My mantra is " no food is as important as a good, long life with my kids". I say that toys elf multiple times a day. Good luck!!

My husband's 2 aunts had gastric bypass about 4-5 years ago and look great. They don't deny themselves anything. They will take a bite of whatever they want just to satisfy the craving. I'm scared about missing food but I know I'll be okay :)

I'm scared also. It will be twice as hard for me, because I take a med that increases my appetite. However, I'm determined to get this weight off! I'm going to try my hardest. I'd like to keep myself busy because I eat more when I'm bored.

"Life style changes" is more about control than denial. In the long run, the number of foods that you can never have again is really quite small, if any. What I found quite surprising is that you really can be absolutely satisfied with a bite or two. Amazing. You might find some good guidelines in my post "The Prime Directive". You're gonna love the new you!!

I had to have counselling before my op was approved. The surgeon believed that I was addicted to food and wouldn't be able to cope when food was taken away. To cut a long story short he was right and the counselling was very helpful. My op is aug 23rd and I'm sure it's still going to be the hardest thing I've ever done in my life but I'm going to do it anyway, I hate being trapped in this body.

Is like Europeans... Having travelled to Germany and France, I've seen how they eat. They truly do indulge in pastry, chocolate, cheeses and breads. But they eat moderately. It's their lifestyle. We can do it too in the maintenance phase. Just have one Hershey kiss instead of a handful etc. Or have a bite of your friends bday cake instead of a whole piece (again during maintenance) And your taste preferences truly will change. I cut out most refined carbs before surgery and now all I want is pork tenderloin and fresh produce. It will get easier!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
