Eating At Family Events..?

Recommended Posts

Okay so today was my Great uncles Funeral and afterward they served the food. Now in my family and our culture it's kinda disrespectful to not eat. My only issue was it wasn't ANYTHING there that was remotely healthy and what I like to call "Bypass friendly" lol I'm still pre opt and was tempted/forced into eating the delicious Sin! I Ate really small portions and tried to eat slow as if I already had it. How can i maintain a healthy diet at family events or do I not eat even if I'm hungry? How can I still be around my family and not eat what they give me? I tried to be polite but my family won't take no for a answer! Lol does anyone have this problem or is it just my crazy family?

I fortunately dont have a family like that but as long as you don't over eat and eat small portions I would say you will be okay.

Eating is a very social thing... After surgery you won't be able to eat... And what you can eat wont amount to very much. Your surgery will be your excuse and your tool to not eat the things you shouldn't.

I plan on bringing my own dish to social events to make sure there is something there I am able to have. If you get stuck without a fall back dish, look for lunch meat and roll up with a piece of cheese, or chicken or ham. We will still have some options!

My family is party central!!! I had my surgery on June 4th and by now we had 3 birthday party's, 4th July, Fathers Day and who knows what else. I crunched on flavored ice during most of it. Sometimes I just went to another room while they were eating. I didn't want the food after surgery, but the smell of it made me so nauseated.

I had the same problem. The smell of food just makes me nauseous. But if I could eat it I would. But just stay strong. Drink lots of Water. I usually bring food with me. Lately. It's been watermelon and Protein Drinks.< /p>

What I have done is bring a dish that can be shared, but that I know that I will be able to eat... I can still put other food on my plate and cut it up and push it around if need be... However just being there and sharing in the family activity is usually enough... Unless you bring attention to your plate, you might be surprised how little other people will pay attention.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
