As anyone had or know if you can have your spouse take Family Medical Leave from work to help you out during and after surgery? I'm from California in case the laws are different. Thanks :)

I believe FMLA is a federal law. Your husband should be able to take time off of work through FMLA to take care of you. He will just have to have paper work completed by your surgeon. Good luck!!!

Did he get paid anything for that week?

He had to use either his own sick leave or vacation time that he had available to use. A spouse can use up to 80 hours for dependent care a year. They have to use any leave they have accumulated.

Oh okay I see. So should he still bother with filing for fmla or just plan his vacation for the date of my surgery? Thanks for your help :-)

My husband used sick leave he had and that's why he filed fmla. That way it wasn't held against him when he took off. If your husband can schedule vacation for your surgery and it not be held against him then I would say he wouldn't need to file for fmla protection.

I'm in HR and I would at least have the paperwork ready to go for fmla. God forbid but if you have complications then he would have to "call off" work and would not be protected.

Okay I'll have him file then. His work is really a bunch of d**** so he doesn't even get sick leave but atleast he gets vacation. Yeah it is better to be safe than sorry though so I'll have him do the paper work. On a brighter note his job is about to vote in teamsters union so things should be changing for the better pretty soon!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
