New To The Process....but Optimistic:)

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

My name is CamyMarie and I am 22 years old. I have just begun the journey to get approval for weight loss surgery. So far I have only completed the Introductory Seminar and all the paperwork. The particular program that my pcp sent me to is very busy this time of year so they told me it would be a 4-6 week wait until I can see the surgeon. And I have no idea who my surgeon will be. So in that time I have become so anxious and nervous as I have soooooo many questions in my head about RNY. By the way I have UHC insurance. I am joining this forum because I see just how supportive everyone is of one another and I would love to be apart of that. I have struggled with my weight my entire life and I am ready to bring on PERMANENT changes into my life. I would love ro hear back from others who have had the surgery about their approval process (particularly those with UHC, United Healthcare, or any others please feel free to chime in as well. Also if you are just beginning your journey like me, I would love for us to be able to support each other. I am excited to be here:)

Welcome :) I'm scheduled for surgery Friday August 3rd so I have 8 days left. I have Vermont state health insurance. I started my weight loss journey back in Septemeber but went to my information seminar in November and I finally got to meet my surgeon in June. I got approved by my insurance 2 weeks ago. I on day 7 of my 14 day pre-op diet and as of yesterday I had already lost 9 pounds but I haven't weighed myself yet today lol. I had to do 6 months with a dietician. Each insurance is different because others have a set weight loss goal that u have to meet before they will approve u. Good luck on your weight loss journey

Welcome!! This is a wonderful site with plenty of support from great people :) I have just begun the process too, and am hoping for surgery in December. I have United Healthcare Community Plan, and they only cover RNY. They also require I do 6 months of supervised diet weigh-ins with my Dr. Every UHC plan is different though. Some require 6 months, some require none. Have you called UHC yet to find out the requirements? That's a good start. Comgrats on your decision. Glad to see someone else here with UHC and in their 20's, like me :)

@love always.....I have contacted my insurance to find out the requirements and they said all I needed was to have the surgeon write a letter of medical necessity for me to have the surgery and I have to do a Psych consult and a Nutrition Consult. I am currently working with the surgeon's office to get the requirements out of the way. According to my insurance they said they would pay for any of the wls the surgeon performs. I am also really excited to see someone in their twenties start this journey as well. I am really hoping for a surgery date by December as well. I would loooooooove to start the new year with my new weight loss tool. Keep me updated on your progress towards approval:)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
