Back to the operating table....

Recommended Posts

Hello

I had my band put in on Feb 1, 2006. Almost 1 year to the day, on January 31st I am returning to the operating table.

My surgeon thinks my band has slipped. He has put 7cc in since the operation and I ended up not having restriction but I would throw up if I did drink at the same time. (I Know we shouldn't be doing that). Anyway, he took all of the liquid out and we hoped it would slip back down. It didn't and so I am going back to the operating table. I am lucky that this operation is covered by my medical plan. He said that if there is to much bleeding, he will have to leave the band open and go back in in a few months to close. I lost 30lbs when I first had the band but it stopped. I have absolutely no restriction. Even when I had the 7cc in, I could eat a normal size meal. I so want this to work!

Has this happened to anyone else?

I am slipped too. Going in tomorrow for a revision or removal(they won't know which til they get in there I guess). I've been on liquids for 2 weeks and I'm miserable. Slipping can be caused by excessive PBing, chronic overeating, improperly placed band, etc. I'm not sure what caused mine either. At first I thought it was due to all the PBs and poor eating habits, but the fact is I never was able to tolerate my first fill and it was all removed after my esophagus was swelling. Maybe it wasn't placed just right in the first place. Who knows. I wish you the best canadian bandster! I am self-pay as well and the bills are piling up!!

I'm self pay too from Mexico. Does the doc charge you for additional surgery(slipped bands) ? What if it was placed wrong? I hear he's a great doc. I hope all goes well for you and you get the band working for you. Good Luck and keep us posted. Kelley

Yes, I was charged. About 1/2 the price of the original surgery. They were able to save my band thank goodness. I also had to pay $250 for an endoscopy to make sure there was no erosion-which there wasn't. I doubt the doctor would admit a misplaced band.

The band is still intact. Unfortunatley he couldn't put the band back on yet. I will have to go back in 3-4 months and then have the band put back on. He said there was too much scar tissue that needed to heal before he would put it back on. I now have the horrible shoulder and rib pain which I haven't had before. I guess the gas has to work itself out. I won't be able to take another week of from sick time (we get one week a year) and so I will take a week vacation. I am lucky because this is covered under the canadian medical plan even though the original surgery wasn't.

I guess I'm just frustrated because I thought I would have one endoscopy and one surgery. I will now end up having one endoscopy and 3 surgeries.

Thanks for all of your support.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
