If you can meet your daily requirements of Protein from real foods you won't need the shakes. You will have to drink the shakes as a supplement as long as you aren't able to eat the foods or you aren't meeting the daily requirements. I am 5 months out and I don't drink them anymore. I hated them. But my hair is thinning too.

My doctor told me to start the Protein Shakes 5 days after surgery. I had to pass gas first then start my 5 day count. Not sure what this was for, but this is what I was told and what I did. Do not buy a lot before surgery though, because I did and ended up not liking any of what I bought. I wasted so much food after surgery because my taste changed so much after surgery I couldn't eat or drink what I could before. Get a good sample of quite a few different ones before. As far as what you can put into Proteins shakes just about anything you can stomach...everything has to be liquid and try to keep the acid down. I just drank the premixed ones. I am currently doing Premier Protein because it is 1 gram of sugar and 30 grams of Protein.< /p>

But after surg my dr said drink only Water untill I feel I can stomach to take more in. Hydration is more important at first then the Protein. U do need the protein but they really want u hydrated so start shakes when u feel I can.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
