One Year Out: Nutritional Needs

Recommended Posts

I started at 235 a year ago. At 5'8" my goal was 155. I am stuck at 165 for the last 2 months. My question is should I start counting calories and carbs as well as proton? I weight train 2 a week with 30 minutes of cardio and 45 minutes cardio 3-4 of the other 5 days. I do about 80 to 90 grs of proton but have not been counting carbs, fats or calories. Any guidance is appreciated

Congrats on your weight loss !! I totally understand about those last 10-20 lbs. Can you consult with a nutritionist or your docotor? I would start counting calories to see what you are consuming on a daily basis, if it needs tweeking then tweek. Are you getting your heart rate up to where it should be when doing cardio? I wear a heart rate monitor, I need to be in a certain range for my age/weight to get the best bang for my exercise. I always thought that my heart rate was where it should be when doing cardio but when I purchased the heart rate monitor WOW was I off base !!! You may not be exerting yourself enough during cardio.

Are you suppose to consume fat? My dietician tells me no fat but fish has 3 grams of fat & I need Protein. So I'm like whatever!

Fat is an important macro nutrient. You want to eat lower fat but not remove it all together as it is essential in metabolizing certain Vitamins and nutrients such as Vitamin D. Be leary of any nutritionist who does not have you eating fat or carbs. Key is moderation and balance.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
