Jen in SoCal 189 Posted July 12, 2012 I am going to tell you a story and talk about embarrasing.... Maybe two or three years ago I was suffering from excruciating back spasms. It was the weekend of course, those things always happen when you can't get to your own Doctor. I went to a walk in clinic that I found on my health insurance website. After waiting and paying my demanded copay, I was weighed, had blood pressure taken etc...I saw the dr. The place was very busy and just had curtains around the examination rooms, like a hospital. The doctor came in and did the usual, pressed on my back, see if I could bend down, stuff like that. he said he would order xrays but we had to wait for the xray technician to be called in because it was the weekend. So we waited and waited. As we waited he proceded to tell me that my back problems were because of my weight. he told me I was 97 pounds over weight. I think I was about 220 at the time. He left. He came back and told me I should eat smaller portions, lower my fat intake and cut my carbs. Apparently he thought i was stupid as well as fat and I didn't know what or how I was supposed to eat. He left. He came back again. I remember word for word what he said to me. He said, "You know you're big right? I mean you're REALLY big"...I was about 220, Had this man never seen a fat woman in his life before???? The part that really hurt was not what this D-bag dr was saying to me. I could hear the people in the exam rooms on either side of me laughing. They were laughing at ME and they hadn't even seen me. I will remember that day for the rest of my life. I finally found a primary care physician that doesn't brush off every problem I have on my weight. She actually tries to help me. I guess my point is this, when you go to see your bariatric surgeon, you are welcomed and accepted there. At least that was my experience. The staff at my office are encouraging and treat you like you should be treated and not like a second class citizen. It is your safe haven. Its not a place to break down, its a place to feel like you're finally empowered. You are taking a huge step in improving your health and your life. You should be jumping up and down for joy! I hope the rest of your appointments go smoothly for you and you have a wonderful experience with your surgery. It's worth every stressfull moment of preop! :) :) 1 DLCoggin reacted to this
