Protein/food/enough Calories

Recommended Posts

Mami, it might help if you tell us specifically what shakes and any other Protein options (such as bars) you have tried. Otherwise we're kind of shooting in the dark. I've tried everything everyone has named so far in this thread. My personal two favorites - Pure Protein with 35g of protein per 11oz can and Myoplex with 42g of protein per 17oz serving. Myoplex hands down has the best taste, most protein, and 300 calories per serving (which it sounds like you need). I chose Pure Protein because I didn't need the calories and Pure Protein has 160 calories and tastes almost as good. The Pure Protein Bars are also excellent and available from 20g of protein all the way up to a whopping 78g. They have a number of flavors but for my money, the chocolate Deluxe is absolutely superb.

You're doing great on the weight loss. But I'm sure your doctor told you how important the protein is for the healing process. Calories are probably less important than protein but 300 calories a day is not enough and it's not sustainable long term. Anything that is not sustainable does not meet the all important "prime directive" - lifestyle changes. Have you called your doctor to get his/her advice? If not, now might be a very good time to do so. There are many, many options and you only need to find one that works for you. Failure to do so could force your body into starvation mode which will slow your weight loss and the healing process.

I know you can do this! And I think from reading all of the posts on the forum, you know it too. Take charge, talk to your doctor, and give us more specific information so we can offer more specific suggestions!

I bought it on the unjury website. It's pricey. You can also try the WonderSlim products...they make some Protein Soups as well.

I got it on their site too. With regular shipping it still got there the next day from VA to PA!

Pure Protein chocolate is my favorite but, I also have Pure Protein in vanilla and Cookies and cream. Syntrax Mint chocolate cookie is also a favorite.

Try mixing things into the shakes to get rid of the aftertaste in some shakes. I for one don't care for vanilla shakes but, if you add 1 tablespoon of PB2 into it it's not so bad.

PB2 is Peanut Butter with the fat taken out of it so it's powder. Google it! I got it on Amazon and love it when I'm in the mood for a thicker, richer shake. It add protein too without too much sugar or fat. I also use capella drops - sugar free, calorie free but, adds nice flavor. I like Toasted Almond and Coconut flavors in my chocolate shake :)

Keep trying...you'll find what you like and can tolerate.

I love the Muscle Milk shakes too! I found a 24 pack of the 8 OZ size at costco. Saved a bit of money than buying the 4 packs & then I have a drawer in my refrigerator full of them & harder to ignore. I have one every morning!

You might want to research the "shots" a little. Couple of us here on the forum did a little research a while back and the type of protein included in those (I believe it's "collagen" protein) is very poor when it comes to absorbability by the body.

Love your new picture! Looking goooooooood Ms. Mami!!!

Hi I've been lurking and reading posts for awhile and could not figure out how to post. I had RNY on May 29 weighed in at 253 now at 225 and holding for over a week. I am able to get in enough Protein and Water and mst food agrees with me. I've thrown up about 3 times because of eating too much too fast but basically I've been pretty symptom free. I exercised before surgery and now have upped to 1 1/2 hours daily. I eat around 700-800 calories each day. I am wondering if this is too much compared to what others are experiencing? I'm deciding to stay off the scale for a week but I see other people's dramtic losses and get worried. What do you all think?

I have a hard time getting don that much liquid with the shakes so I have resorted to Protein Shots. I have found them at GNC, Vitamin shopp and Walmart. They are about 3 oz and vary in Protein content from 25g to 42g. Theyre expensive($2-$3 each) but that's t only way I can even get close to the 60g my dr recommends. I also like Greek yogurt. It's pretty high in protein.

800 calories doesn't sound like enough if you are doing 90 min of exercise everyday...but I'm no expert...I'm only 2 weeks out. What does your doc say?

He says pretty much do what works. I just started uping my exercise 3 days ago when it appeared I was in a stall. I will be checking with nutritionist in a week if I'm still stuck.

28 pounds six weeks out is a great number - congratulations!! 700-800 calories a day may be a little low. RNY is all about lifestyle changes. And lifestyle changes have to be sustainable. Long term sustainable. That's the prime directive. The sustainable test has helped me enormously in making dietary and exercise decisions from the day I had my surgery right up to this minute. I've averaged about 1300 calories a day since October 20, 2011. Two weeks ago and 100+ pounds lighter, the surgeon told me she didn't want me to lose more than an additional ten pounds and to up my calorie intake to 1800. That sounded a little high to me so I'm shooting for 1500. Crazy as it sounds, there are more days than not where I'm finding it very difficult to hit the 1500 mark. I have (I think) a great appetite but I just can't hold that much and I'm truly not t h a t hungry. I am absolutely confident that I could maintain a 1300 calorie average (there are days when I hit 1700-1800) but we'll have to see what happens with the weight. So far it's holding around 170 for the last three weeks. So based on long term sustainability, you might consider upping your calories to say 1000 a day for a month or two and see what happens. Most doctors recommend a weight loss goal of two pounds a week. Gradual calorie increases until you reach that average will take you where you want to go and do it in a healthy manner.

Stalls are all part of the process and nothing to worry about. I love your decision to stay away from the scales for a week. Two would be even better! Stalls often last a couple of weeks but sometimes more. Stay focused on following the protocol, stay active and stay away from the scales as much as you can! You're gonna love the new you and congratulations again on a great start!!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
