So anyone finding it true that after surgery we are more likely to become drunks. That's crazy

I heard it on the news. I think it's because we consume very little & get drunk fast.

They say after RNY people can become alcoholics because of displacement. Meaning...now that a person can't eat anything they want or doesn't have food to sooth oneself they choose alcohol because they can drink liquids. Then of course because of the re-arranged anatomy RNY folks get drunk on very little and also sober up rather quickly. So they drink more. Pretty scary stuff. All the more to get our heads right before having the surgery so we know what to do with ourselves once we can't eat our way through emotions or boredom etc. Seems to be the big thing going around tv and the internet at the moment.

Exactly Kookieto...that's a great way to think! Another thing people replace eating with is shopping. That can be pretty scary too but, what's worse is we'll have to shop because we'll be shrinking out of our clothes. I guess from what my therapist told me some get excessive with it. I guess it will always be a battle in one form or another but, I have to say I'd prefer a battle with shopping versus a battle of the bulge. :)

I was told that having alcohol will get you more buzzed faster that non RYN surgery people. I am 10 wks post op. I had a glass of wine a couple of weeks ago and nothing... My dr. says that you could/will get drunk faster after RNY surgery and to be very careful etc. etc. I have only had wine so far and have not had anything else but in my case and opinion a glass of wine pre op and/or post op is the same so far.........

Honestly I cant wait to go shopping and buy clothes where normal people go. And not spend $80 on a pair of Jeans

I waited til 6 months post op to try alcohol, and it hit me way faster. Now I drink socially but the sugar calories and hangovers aren't worth it to me anymore. And I definitely did see a transference in shopping as well, all Of a sudden I went from one or two stores I could shop at to basically all of them. It was a good feelin though.

I train with two ladies that had the surgery & both of them became alcoholics. They liked the immediate buzz & then the quick sober. Both of them gained a lot of weight back...liquid calories! Both are doing great now!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
