Sugar Substitute Concerns

Recommended Posts

I'm worried about sugar subs, all types because I have a problem having any of them.

I can't honestly say I am allergic, but I do have a reaction to them. Taste explodes in my mouth, aftertaste, and feel as if my throat is closing (with some of them).

Am looking for shakes that don't have sucrose type sweeteners.

Also looking for substitutes for the sugarfree sweetened pops and snack items.

I know I am limiting myself horribly with this.

I am also hoping that after surg, or maybe the pre surg liquid diet, will get me accustomed to it.

any tips will be soooo welcome.

Thanks!

I guess everything sugar free isn't really sugar free if you look at the back nutritional facts. It's going to be hard to find items with no sugar at all. Even when you get to the stage of eating fruits it has natural sugar. I hope this will pass for you because you don't want to have issues from not having sugar in your body neither. Like fat isn't good for you but it doesn't mean occasionally you can't have a tiny steak to give you Protein in your body ect... You can get into shock by not having sugar at all. I been reading lately:)

Oh, sugar was always my best friend! LOL It's the substitute stuff I can't take.

Like the sugar-free pops and pudding and Jello and crystal lite. And all the shakes have some type of substitute sucrose thing. All those I can't drink/eat. Have a"reaction" I suppose you could say.

Thank you so much for your post.

I would talk to either your nutritionist or the nurse at your surgeons office. They may know of some brands or products for you.

EEsMom...glad you're going to talk to your nutritionist. I can't imagine you'll be the first patient that she/he has heard can't have sugar substitues. I"m sure they'll find something for you. Even if you have to make your own Protein shakes out of plain Protein powder.

For me Sugar Alcohol sets me off and I haven't even had the surgery yet. Too much of that stuff...errr...is not a good thing for me.

Good luck!

EEsMom: I have a similar issue. I don't eat/drink ANY artificial sugar substitutes. In fact I try to stay clear of chemical additives in my food/drink. I'm pre-op, but I ordered Unjury PLAIN Protein Powder and also several different flavors of pure all natural extracts (Silver Cloud brand). I make a 30 gram Protein (5 grams sugar) shake of 1 scoop Unjury, 8 oz. plain soy milk, 1/2 tsp. extract (I love strawberry and banana) and 1 tsp. raw organic Agave Syrup. YUM!

My DD has a rare metabolic condition called GSD (glycogen storage disease) her body is unable to store or process glucose at all. Unjury Protien is what she has to drink. She also has to drink uncooked Argo cornstarch Bc its a complex carbohydrate and it takes a while to break it down. It tricks her body into thinking she has some stored energy.

I'm in love with Truvia. I find it's more like sugar than Splenda or anything else. I've cooked with it and use it in my coffee each morning. It's derived from a leaf vs being man made from chemicals. Maybe give it a try and see if it behaves more like natural sugar for you. I've also heard great things about agave nectar, but I've never tried it myself. Looking at the nutrition facts it's full of sugar, but it's natural sugars. I haven't ventured it to try it yet. I can tell you that honey doesn't bother me at all. Granted I'm not eating the whole jar at a time, but a little on a biscuit or a pb & honey sandwich doesn't bother me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
