Future bander....

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I am scheduled to have my surgery Feb.22nd @ TLBC. I inquired about this procedure in 2001, but have put off the reality of my situation until just recently. I have about 150lbs to lose and I'm counting on this procedure to help me reach my goal, one step at a time.

Has anyone had to seek out help for the emotional side of over-eating? I have seen interviews with Carnie Wilson and she was still unable to deal with her emotional bagage, even though she was down 150lbs. She ended up drinking excessively and had to seek therapy for her emotions and alcohol addiction.

Any suggestions/thoughts/comments are welcome.....

Jill:confused:

I should be seeing someone to get to the root of my over-eating. But I don't. I was banded on 11/14 and still miss eating a lot. Some days are worse than others. I have heard too that people turn to alcohol, drugs, etc. because when you think about it, you're just taking on another habit to replace the one you gave up - FOOD!

Almost everyone here has seen someone regarding their emotional issues with food....most insurance companies require you go thru a psychological evaluation before you can be approved for surgery. This is often a good opening to begin a relationship with a counselor.....just be sure that whatever counselor you use understands eating disorders and doesn't fear working with weight loss patients. Counseling can make all the difference in how successful your weight loss journey will be and the extent to which you can be a compliant patient (there are many eating and lifestyle rules to go by afterward - be sure you research that and feel you can live with them.)

i think it was oprah that said "nobody overeats merely because they love food".....ever since i heard that i've kinda tried to get to the root of my overeating problem...who knows---i'm the type that eats when i'm sad, happy, hungry, tired, awake, etc...

i think it's important that we remember that the lap band is an important 'tool' that can help us lose the weight---i think we're supposed to get help mentally also.

best of luck to you-i also need to lose around 150 lbs. keep me posted on your journey! good luck on feb. 22nd-i'll be thinking of you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
