The Gym Still Isnt Fun

Recommended Posts

I'm almost 7 weeks post-op. and I go to the gym every other day..... but I still dread it.... I haven't reached that point where I strive on the work out..... Instead, I jog on the elliptical and steady watch the time and distance.... Waiting for it to be over cause it hurts and I always feel like I can't catch my breath............. Please tell me this has happened to some of you and eventually it gets easier .........

I was like that too its good to have a gym buddy to make you want to go! I also found having an mp3 player helps a lot while at the gym....funny thing is I end up wanting to go longer on the treadmill because there ends up a new song on the I heart radio app so I end up doing more than my 30 minutes!

I am still pre-op but hav started going to the gym to prepare and get on the Protein shakes. I agree that a gym buddy is a huge help. Also, what has helped me is hiring a trainer. They push u and u want to do it so u keep trying. I feel your pain though. I have a bad knee and te elliptical hurt like crazy. I'm hoping post op that te knee will hurt less as weight drops.

Hang in there!

I think you're right about the Gym buddy!! I need to convince some of my friends to just "join" me ,-) .... I usually listen to pandora durring my work out even tried watching a show on Netflix.... Years ago I would read while walking on the treadmill or bike..... Hopefully it just takes time.... Once I don't have as much weight on me I pray it just get easier :)

I also dont care for the gym and am a total clock watcher. I do better when I make fun playlists for myself on my iPhone and listen to those or french tapes (learn to speak French) or even read a magazine. I make a deal with myself to read the whole magazine (skimming a lot of it) and not get off the treadmill or eliptical until I am done. The time whips by that way.

The other thing is maybe you do enjoy being active you just dont enjoy the drudgery of the gym? You could swim, walk outdoors, try belly dancing, ride a bike, go hiking somewhere beautiful, play volleyball with friends, go golfing, the list is endless. There are lots of things you can do to move your body, it does not have to be at the gym. Some fitness centers also offer a boot camp style workout where you could meet some other people that might help you stay on track and maybe you could walk with those people or something.

Just some ideas! I hope it gets better.

My hubby has his own gym I didn't go to yet. I'm using my DVD from home.

I agree with ChatCat. It's really important to find something that you enjoy and that may not be a gym. If I hate doing it (or eating it or drinking it), it's not going to be sustainable long term and that means that it doesn't fit in the "lifestyle changes" prime directive! There are so many options to just about every aspect of the journey - keep searching and trying new things until you find the ones that work for you!!

You all have some great tips!! Thank you :) I'm going to try a work out video today.... Let's see if that's more my enjoyment..... If not, time to wrangle up a buddy or two and hit the gym :)

Maybe when I lose some more ill get a trainer if it's still to hard :)

Thanks again, everyone!! :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
