My ex friend had that done....biggest mistake she still regrets it and her surgery was April 17th! She can't eat but a bite here and there and throws up all the time! She already has had an endoscopy and found out she's got gastritis which is the beginning of an ulcer! I watched her everyday struggle to eat the littlest thing.....after seeing what she's gone through I'm glad I had RNY instead of sleeve!

Ther reason why I went with the RNY is because you loose the most weight with RNY procedure, which is much more than the sleeve or the banding. I wanted the best bang for my buck !!!

I considered it, but RNY is better for my comorbidities.

RNY was the best option for me as well but...there may be specific reasons for your doctor recommending the sleeve that we obviously know nothing about. If you're not comfortable with his/her recommendation, you might want to consider getting a second opinion from another doctor. You also might want to check out Alex's sleeve forum (the same guy that runs this forum) at http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/. There's also a lot of info on the Net comparing the advantages and disadvantages of both surgeries. Congratulations on your decision to move forward!!

My PCP is the one that mentioned the sleeve, he said he had done some research on it and prefered it to RNY because there was less malapsorbtion issues. I havnt talked to my surgeon yet, I will meet with him next month and see what he has to say. They say there is less dumping with the sleeve but in some sick way I think I may need something like dumping to scare me from eating things i know i shouldnt! Keeping my options open and I will let you all know what my surgeon says! Thanks for all the comments btw!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
