"Had sleeve surgery 8/28/12."

Hello PeanutButter!

Can you give me some details, specifics.. About your surgery.. Recovery,, how you are doing,, positive & negative - ??

I've just finished all my requirements for the RNY surgery, Next step is surgery date.

Spoke to a gal today who had the sleeve done and feels great. Spoke to a friend who's mother-in-law had RNY and had many complications! Who decides on the surgery? You or the Doctor? Why did you go with the Sleeve?

I'm 5'0", 230#, 48 years old.

Appreciate your input, in advance

Dawn

Hi Dawn!

I did a lot of research between the sleeve and the bypass and decided to go with the sleeve because it was less invasive. I had absolutely no complications at all and feel fantastic! I was up and about within 2 hours of my surgery.

Talk to your doctor and see what he/she feels is the best option for you.

If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Maxx

Bird,

I had RNY. I am a RN and also did much research on the various procedures. Each has benefits and deductions. It truly depends on what you're looking for and how restrictive you feel you need to go. I know people who've had issues with all the procedures. I will only speak for myself. My surgery itself went well. I am apparently the 1 in 1,000,000 that suffers horrendous pain with lap procedures. I don't think it would have mattered which way I went. Just be forewarned that not everyone can claim it didn't hurt a bit or they were nothing more than sore. And mine was all muscular. Not a bit of it was gas pain. That said I'd do it again in a heartbeat (just one not so in the dark;)). I've lost 70 lbs since June 7th. Off all insulin as soon as they got my sugars post surgery under control. No more BP meds. I don't get so out of breath when walking and I can do at least 3 flights of stairs without feeling like I'm gonna die. My only complication has been constant nausea and vomiting all solids. But that is all my gall bladder. As soon as that comes out I should be golden!!

"I had RNY"

Thanks for the replies,

I'm pretty set on the RNY, but older brothers trying to talk me out of it. "what if it doesn't work" "what happens when you gain all the weight back". Lots of discouragement.

Personally, since I can't have Jillian Michels at my house every day for the next 6 months screaming at me to get up and exercise, I need something with 'consequences'. I need to "Feel" if I've messed up.

I don't know if the Sleeve does that...

Thanks for your input & experience,

Sounds like you are doing very well.

Is it common to have gallbladder problems after the RNY? Did you have trouble with it prior?

Dawn

It's common to have gall bladder issues after any massive weight loss. I had stones prior but no issues. That started almost 10 weeks to the day out. My surgeon could kick himself for not taking it out originally. Or maybe it's me who could kick him;)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
