Surgery Day

Recommended Posts

I have a question to anyone that has already had their surgery, my orginal date for surgery was 7/9, but it has been

changed to 8/1.. this is my dilema, I am going on vacation to California on 8/15, my family lives there and we will be celebrating my parents 60th wedding annivesary. I am concerned because it will be so soon after and I will still be in the soft food stage. I want to have it before I go because I've been waiting so long. So my question is do I have it before vacation or wait till after ?

I don't know what to tell you but I had a similar situation. My daughter is getting married two weeks post op and I have to travel to San Diego and then the reception- I will be on full liquid diet stage. But more important to get the surgery for me then to eat at the wedding. So even though my surgery date was moved back to cause this dilemma I chose to move forward and realize that this is my life now- but one I chose and will not regret even when everyone is eating around me! At least I hope I don't feel sorry for myself. And one less plate to pay for.

Thank you so much for your imput, I feel the same way, It is very important for me to have this surgery, my step daughter thought I should wait, because it's vacation and you want to have fun !! I told her that my fun should be based on seeing my family and not the food I eat !! I know that I have already made up my mind and that I will have it done before, I was just worried about the traveling, so soon after. I am also going to San Diego ! I can not wait.. thanks again.

Hi, the way I feel is that we are always going to encounter food from one occasion to the next and we need this surgery to help us get healthy so I say just do it. :) My surgery will be in December right around Christmas, but I'm going to do it then anyway...got to learn control anyways and even though I know it's going to be hard, I'm trying to have faith that we can all make this work. Best of luck!

Thank you, I agree we need to learn how to deal with all these situations . I'm still waiting on my insurance approval, should be any day now. I will have the surgery on the 1st and go away on the 15th. And I'm sure all will be good !!! Good luck to you also !!

I think u should still go for surgery on 8/1. My surgery is 8/3. It will be hard since you'll still be on mushy foods but at least u know u wont over indulge in food plus you've been waiting a Long time.

I am having it on the 1st, I was just concerned about not feeling well enough to travel, it is a family reunion, so I will be close to my parent's home and staying with my cousin. I think you are right, I would have over indulged and then I would have been upset with my self.. I look at it like this, this is the path I was meant to take..

Good luck with your Journey.

U think the same as I do :) I understand what u mean about what if u aren't feeling well. I have a family reunion August 4th that I can't go to because I'll still be in the hospital :( but I chose to do this before they set up the reunion so they understand me not going but my family reunion is only 20 minutes from my house where u have to fly don't u?

I think that as long as you can meet your nutritional requirements and physical limitations it will be fine. Do you have to lift your luggage or will there be someone with you to help? Is it a very long flight where blood clots are an issue?

You are right, you are going to enjoy their company, not food. I've already been to a birthday party and barbecue and I'm 8 days out. Family reunion this weekend. If you have a bad moment just remind yourself that food is not the priority of the event!

It's doable.

I am not sure about rny but my dad had surgery and had to fly 2 weeks after and they gave him compression tights to wear to prevent blood clots. U might want to ask your surgeon.

It is a 6 hr flight with includiing a lay over, NJ to Ca. I will have plenty of people with me to help, I will have to talk to my doctor about the blood clot issue. I'm 7 days into my 2 week liquid diet, it's a struggle, but I keep saying it will be worth it !!! how are you doing ?

For that long of a flight, blood clots are definitely a concern so talking to your doctor will be wise. Let them know that you will not lift your luggage! You will be offerred a soda in flight likely - just ask for Water frequently and hydrate during your layover.

Some days are easier than others for me -I'm 11 days out now. Hydrating is my main issue -it's just difficult! My family event this weekend went well. I did have some moments where I wish I could have had my uncles yummy smoked ribs but reminded myself that I can next year. This year I just sipped a Protein drink while everyone ate and sat there and joked around with them. It wasn't bad! Good luck and enjoy your trip!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
