What's Going On With Me?

Recommended Posts

I everyone. I'm extremely frustrated and need some support. I'm one month post op and I've been losing steadily for a while, but all of a sudden I stopped. I've heard of plateaus where you don't lose for a bit, but I'm actually gaining a pound here and there! I'm eating what I've been eating. Haven't been cheating or eating cake on the side or anything. But how is it even possible to GAIN weight when I've been eating a fraction of what I ate before surgery? It should be falling off! Even if I DID eat something "naughty", I still can't eat a fourth of what I did before. I've been at the same weight for two weeks. My clothes feel looser but I don't lose! I feel like my surgery didn't even work! Has anyone else experienced this frustration? What am I doing wrong? I drink my Water, I exercise, I eat right. It's all just stopped. Help!!! I'm at my wits end.

Hi Deb!

I wish I knew what to tell you, but I'm right there with you. I not only quit losing, but now I'm gaining, and I haven't cheated either. I don't get it. I'm frustrated and depressed!

You may not be losing. 300 calories is nowhere near enough to sustain normal bodily functions let alone exercise on top of it. Your body is most likely in starvation mode. You should talk to your nutritionist ASAP and increase your calories to at least 800

starvation mode works itself out eventually, im getting all of my cals in Protein shakes, i rarely intake solid foods. I am losing because i measure. .... i speak with my nutritionist a lot lol ... hes aware and approves as long as im meeting reqs which i am.

This is all very normal. Don't let it get you too upset because it will happen over and over again. I was so frustrated at first because I would plateau and at times gain a few lbs. Luckily, my niece was 6 months ahead of me and would encourage me because she had been there over and over. When I would plateau my nutritionist would say to up my Protein & it would help. I can say that sometimes days hungrier than others & usually lose more on those days. You may plateau for 2-3 weeks then lose 12 lbs in a week. Write your weights down & it will encourage you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
