Should I have PB'ed?

Recommended Posts

This morning I guess I was a little tight because I took a few bites of my Breakfast and it did not want to go down. It caused that pain in my chest. I then sipped some Water hoping that would help it along. I burped a couple of small burps and it felt like the water (which I could still feel was cold in my chest) was just coming up my esophagus a bit but wasn't going to go down. BAsically I felt I was going to have a productive burp. I have had one sliming episode and did NOT want to PB so I just kept swallowing with my mouth closed hoping that would force the food through(no food or drink). After about 5 minutes I felt some relief like it went down. Now I wonder though, maybe having it go down when it was possibly too big for the stoma or something was more risky to my band than just productive burping it all back up. Anyone know????? Thanks!

I have been in this situation a couple of times and I bend over and let it come out/up if that is what it wants to do. It feels so much better getting it out of there. I then give it a rest and a couple of hours later get on liquids for a meal or two. I don't try to make it stay down.

I wouldn't say you SHOULD have pbed, but you COULD have pbed.

There is no "should" have. It's not really something we "should" do, just something that happens when food can't pass, or - well - for random reasons sometimes.

Its just a guessing game most days. Sometimes when you get a golf ball you can wait it out. Other times warm or tepid liquids help get it down. Sometimes that makes it worse. Sometimes it just has to come out and sometimes not. For me, it is what it is, and nothing I do seems to help.

I eat very slow, and chew, chew, chew. Sometimes the biggest blockage has been on liquids or mushies. I don't always think its a "blockage" as much as the stomach swelling or something like that. We just use that word "stuck" to describe the feeling.

You know, I have always wanted to ask my surgeon his opinion on which is worse...having something stuck and irritating the esophagus or PB'ing.

I haven't asked becuase his reply would likely be a snarky "don't do either".

But I really have been curious about it.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
