Thinking About Getting Gastric Bypass...

Recommended Posts

Hello I'm new here!

Since I was 16 years old I have always struggled with my weight... I went from being 115 lbs to now 210 lbs.... I am 22 years old and I am planning on being a nurse.

My biggest issue is that I have some health problems, most of them started just appeared as I started gaining weight. I have severe IBS which affects my everyday life, I also have chronic acid reflux which I have also never had when I was thinner... about 3 years ago i had a cyst the size of a golf ball attached to my ovarie that ruptured, I had internal bleeding and had to have emergency surgery... this happens once a year now. I have had 3 surgerys for this. I was also born with heart disease, my weight has been affecting my cardiac health more and more. I also have high cholesterol. I've had doctors tell me that this weight needs to come off, its affecting me.

I have been trying everything to drop the weight, I've had 3 personal trainers and nutritionists for the last 4 years, I went to fat camp I tried weight loss programs and specials diets... I did lose weight but within the last 4 years its been 15 lbs off, 20 lbs on...

I know gastric bypass is extreme, but at this point I need to lose this weight desperately... I am too young to have so many health issues, and I know most of them contribute to my weight....

Let me know what you think, and if I sound like a good candidate for this surgery. I am going to NYU for a consultation on June 11th.

Welcome to the forum! This is a great place for support and the answers to many questions. Only your doctor can make the determination regarding whether you're a good candidate for RNY but NYU certainly has a great reputation. If it turns out that you are a good candidate, you'll be amazed at the results!! Keep us posted on your progress!

Hello Mandaq I just had my surgery last Wednesday at NYU . First of all you're going to the best. Second of all you really have to ask a million questions anything you can think of write down. If you can request Dr Fielding , he is a master of this and all of the bariatric surgeries. Also you can email Dr fielding everyday as many times as you want and he ALWAYS responds . Anyway I can help my email is crptgalry@aol.com

Good luck

I am also 22 and I don't have as many health problems but do suffer from extreme ibs and anxiety. I've been waiting to meet someone on here my age lol. Not many people are age have this surgery done. I should be having mine in September I believe. I am happy with the decision I have made but I think alot of my friends are more worried about the fact tnat I can't drink anymore...im not a huge partier because I have a 4 yr old daughter but most of my friends are into the partying and drinking. Good luck! And remember this surgery is for u, don't let anyone alter ur decision or make u change ur mind. Im here if u ever wanna chat. :)

Thank you all so much for your replies! I have so many questions, so many concerns. It scares me a little bit, like wow what if something terrible were to happen? I saw on Dr. Oz that he thinks it is a under-done life changing surgery that has more positive outcome.

I will definitely be contacting you all that give your emails or we can speak on this website.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
