Hi everyone, I just joined this place. I got my GB surgery done 21/5 so its been a week yesterday. I live in Oman and there weren't many options to do this surgery elsewhere.

After reading about GBS recovery and food stages and Proteins, I am stunned. My doc asked me to drink no Protein supplements, no Calcium citrate! I am on a liquid diet till now that consists of Water, tea, normal juices, broths and Soup. I can drink anything I want without large quantities of sugar.

I asked him and the NUT about Protein intake, supps etc.. They said no extra supplements. And as for the puréed stage, eat what others are eating at home and just purée it. Nothing about protein first, nothing about no sugar. I am clueless on how to proceed.

I also had my surgery the same day as you, through kaiser hospital in northern California. We have been provided a very strict set of guidelines as far a supplements and food (an entire binder). But through this app I have learned that EVERY surgeon, hospital, insurance is different... And so far there doesn't appear to be a right or a wrong way. Listen to your Dr., your body, and let your future lab results to tell you if you need more Vitamins etc!

It's just a bit unnerving, the whole world is moving on one path and I'm headed elsewhere.

You're only on the first week so I wouldn't worry to much. However, I would ask your NUT when you can begin Protein Drinks and if they say "you don't need it" ask why not and if there isn't a medical reason or if they've prescribed you something ... I would just ask "when" if you aren't happy with their answers... I haven't been getting in enough Protein and I feel like death..... I don't want you feeling like this because you weren't properly informed. Protein is VERY important on stage 2 liquid diet. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for your reply, I did ask her! She said I don't advise Protein drinks, you need to get it out of your daily diet. She also told me at month 2 I could eat some fries if I wanted.

Her list of foods for me now include fruit flavoured yogurt, WHITE bread etc

They haven't told me to not drink with meals' no waiting rules nothing!

That sounds like my do "NOT" eat list. I'm 3 weeks post op and I couldn't imagine getting down fries and white bread.....but.... Every doc is different. If you aren't comfortable with the answers your getting google "stage 1 liquids gastric Bypass diet" "stage 2" and "stage 3" .... There is a LOT of helpful tips and guidelines ... But be wary ... They can also differ a lot. Take from it what you think is best for you. But I wouldn't omit PROTEIN.... One thing every doctor, Nut and post op patient drilled into me was Protein PROTEIN PROTEIN (now I just need to follow my own advise! Lol)

This is what I decided to do.. I'm going to follow what my surgeon said not this moron. I'll eat what I cook at home after blending it and avoid too much carbs and sugar for 3 weeks. If things don't look good.i.e I feel weak or don't shed weight, I have all the info I need from reading various things off of the Internet.

Hey Tammy I just wanted to let you know that the Bariatric Advantage Protein Shakes have less calories than muscle milk. My Dr. told me to stay away from Protein shakes with so much calories bariatric advantage has 160 cal. Vs the 310 cal. Per 2 scoops so beware of certain protein shakes Goodluck!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
