I lost 52 lbs, but now

Recommended Posts

Hi, I was banded july 17,2006. I lost 52 pounds and I am real happy about that, but tonight I found a lump in my right breast. I wouldn't be so worried, but I had cervical cancer 9 years ago, so I'm more than a little nervous.I don't want to go through this again. Not to mention, breast cancer runs in my family on my mothers side. As far as i can tell, no body in my family has ever had it as young as I am though, It just figures, something good in my life happens like losing weight, and now I'm struck with this.I really don't know what to think. I have four children. My 2 oldest are 18, and 19 but I have 2 little ones. Somehow my weight doesn't seem to be all that important anymore. It wasn't suppose to happen like this. I'm only 35 years old. I'm almost finished nursing school. i'm supposed to help sick people, not be one before I get a chance to help them. I thought this was behind me. It just goes to show, that you never know. I'm calling my doctor when the office opens in the morning, and i'll pray for a positive outcome, but I'm still sad about it right now. I don't know if I can get any sleep, Ive been up all night worrying myself sick. i'm sorry for venting this, but I really didn't have anyone else to tell. I don't want to upset my family until I get some results from my doctor. i'll keep you all posted, and thanks for caring enough to read this.

Poor thing! Remember that not all lumps are cancer and the sooner you get it checked out the sooner you'll know. I will pray for you. Think positive thoughts and be strong!

Sweetie, I'll pray for your health and for your peace of mind. You don't indicate in your post about your spiritual leanings, so I mean no offense by the offer of prayer.

On a more practical note, worrying yourself sick isn't going to do anyone any good...not you, and certainly not your family. Get your dr. appt. and go through the steps of determining what the lump is. It could be nothing. If it is something, and you have caught it right away, the prognosis is very good for you, and as a nurse, you know that. Talk to yourself like you would talk to one of your patients. Would you want a patient to start in on the worst case scenario? No. Be pragmatic for now. Don't fall into emotion before you even know what you are facing.

I am not hard-hearted, and my heart breaks for you and what you are fearing for your family...but sometimes we have to steel ourselves, chin up, and deal with what we have to deal with. Please, if you have a sister, mom, or friend, make sure you get a real hug from them...until then (((hugs)))!

it's very possible it's just a cyst---see the dr. first--and do what he/she advises--and hopefully it's a minor thing!

best wishes,

Cris, I've been right where you are, and I know it's a scary place. My lump turned out to be breast cancer. I was pretty numb at first, then I got really anxious. Once I had a plan, it was all downhill from there. The treatment was never bad. The time passed quickly, and I'm grateful to say that five and a half years have passed since I finished my treatment. It was, as my family likes to say, another bump in the road. I think the most important part of the whole experience is to stay positive and optimistic. Lean on your family and friends for support and let them help you. Be an expert on your condition. Ask questions and write everything down. Educate yourself and be an active member of your treatment team, if it comes to that. And let me know if I can help in any way. Part of cancer recovery for me is reaching out to others. I'm available to talk or answer any questions you may have. God bless and good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
