Total Cost Of Surgery So Far

Recommended Posts

I went on my insurance website and checked my claim status.

So far The tally is up to $72,000 dollars plus change!!!!

And to think I was bellyaching about paying $3,000 dollars out of pocket?

I am truly counting my blessings today.

Wondering how much others have paid for sugery? Curious to know if there is a difference depending on your geographic location.

Difference based on geographic location - that's a great question and it will be interesting to see if anyone knows the answer or if any kind of pattern emerges from the responses to your post. I'm in So. California and the total on mine was roughly $50k which is a far cry from the $72k. I also had a total co-pay of only $500. I suspect that the co-pay amount is dependent on the insurance policy itself but wonder if some policies calculate the co-pay as a percentage of the total cost of the surgery. Insurance coverage is a make or break deal for most of us and there appears to be a very broad range of costs the insured is responsible for.

I haven't checked to see the cost of the surgery. I also haven't paid anything out of pocket.

I have BCBS and for mine, its running $35000-50000 I believe. I'm in NC. I got some other non weight related surgery in March so my deductible and Max out if pocket were covered already! I owe $291 for the hospital copay! If those weren't met it would be close to $5000 out of pocket.

Just got my bill...,before any insurance deduction it is almost $60,000. Waaaay more than I thought it would be. Hopefully state employees BCBS of NC comes through big time! Now I'm dreading the next bill with the amount I actually owe!

I'm a little freaked out now!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
