I've been banded since November 28, 2006 and I just had my first fill yesterday. He put in 2 cc. How come I feel no restriction and also how can you tell the difference between physical and mental hunger?

I'm not swollen anymore. When were you banded?

i had my first fill 2 weeks ago.... 3cc.

i didnt feel too much change at that point.

after the 2nd fill this week i am noticing more.

but you should still be careful not to get food stuck.....

i took it for granted that i wasnt feeling 'tighter', and i had

a couple of episodes.

Oh I've been stuck a few times just because before I got my band I ate really fast most of the time. But I hear a lot of people aren't at their sweet spot until their 3 or 4th fill

I was banded 1-19-07

You've done really well so far. Trust me it only gets better. I just remember about 2-3 weeks post op, thinking geez am I ever going to feel normal again? But in time you will. Just remember that this time is for healing. Give it a little more time and I promise you will feel a lot better. Good luck to you.

I would go in for another fill for sure. You may not feel restriction for 1 or 2 more fills. Mental hunger is when you think about food constantly and eat when you aren't hungry. Hunger comes in many forms from weakness to a growling stomach. I get the growling stomach.

Thank you for your input. My doctor is weird about fills. I told him I feel no restriction and he keeps telling me its only a tool. But it is supposed to restrict me right?

Yes, you should have restriction. I can't eat more than a 1/2 cup of food at a time. I can PB If I'm not careful. You definitely need to listen to your body.

Hi Melissa, you're still pretty fresh from surgery and it took me quite awhile until I actually felt restriction. Now, about the fill...for me it takes a couple days, sometimes a week before I can feel my fills "kick in". Don't ask me why...it's just the way it works for me! Perhaps you'll be the same and feel much better by next week!

I was also confused about the mental/physical hunger thing until I got my second fill.

Since then I haven't been hungry much at all. I do feel a little empty and my tummy rumbles and then I eat a little.

But to be perfectly honest it is 100% the band and 0% my willpower.

There may be a trace of willpower in the fact that I know if I overindulge I will get an immediate negative physical response. So I don't.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
