Hey Guys, I was banded 8 Aug with an AP-L band. I'm down 27 lbs. Can't say that I have suffered that much cause while I have stopped eating bread, I have not been too religious on my carbs. I had a quick question. I went in last week for my 2nd fill 3.8 cc (the band holds 12cc max). I had good restriction at first 3 days, but now i can still eat more then I need to be eating. I can definitely eat more then a desert plate. My question is, when you get more restriction does it feel like you have food a little stuck when you eat too much? I have yet to get that, I'm full sensation. it's been more like, Oh Shite, that feels like a rock in my stomach then it passes and shortly after i'm hungry again. Will my stomach develop a pouch and give me a satisfied sensation? Sometimes i dont feel hungry, but sometimes i still get strong cravings and hunger shortly after eating?

Any advice? Other then excercise more, I know i need to do that!

Hi guys, I've been on this site for about a week and cool to find "The Mens Room"

50yrs old 5'8" and 240lbs. The health problems with the weight are really hitting me hard (high BP, sleep apnea, constant joint pain). Having said that, I'm scheduled for the band on Oct 26. Next Friday I'm starting the 2 weeks of Optifast and trying to get a jump on it with low carb SlimFast. So far I have not been able to do only the SlimFast without eating something during the day and a little worried when I hit next Friday and know there will be no solid food. Maybe if I could empty my house of food I could do it but have 5 kids running around so that's out of the question. Any suggestions?

Now that I found The Mens Room I'll have to go back and see what everyone has to say.

Dave, I made it thru the pre-op liquid diet by loading up on Water and crystal light. I didnt do the opti, but did the Protein Powder shakes 2 times a day. Good luck, Dave

Aloha

Here is my 2 cents worth, first let me start by saying I'm a 50 year old man, so I've been where your going.

1. Start a Transition diet NOW it will help later in the liquid and mushie stages

2. Join a Gym and get started NOW this will be the key to your success. But start slow take it easy don't over do it and get sore and burn yourself out.

3. Find a Protein Shake that you like and find a couple to give yourself some variety

4. talk to your wife/girlfriend about your decision and get them onboard for support you will need a lot of support.

5. Practice sipping Water. Oh yeal start drinking lots of water NOW and get off the soads and beer. (it was hard for me to give up Diet Coke, till I figured out I was drinking 14 aday)

6. Get ready to buy some new pants, shirts

7. Enjoy getting ready for your surgery, do not think about what you won't be able to eat anymore but think about what you are about to become...HEALTHIER!! ( I use to take meds for blood press. diabetes, cholesterol, now I'm off all my meds)

8. Get some good workout shoes. My starting weight was 398 Lbs. and the cheap shoes were killing my feet, get a good pair it will make a big difference in your workout.

9. Again talk to your wife/girlfriend and let them know just how important there support is to you in this Quest. Thats right I said quest, I'm up at 4.30am every morning to go to the gym and without my Dear Sweet Wife's support it would be so hard.

10. Relax, enjoy, talk about it with close friends and family and feel of their Love and care for you, they will be proud of your decision. I know my Wife, mother, father, brothers, sister and extended family are behind me 1000%

11. Remember the Band is a tool, it's not a magic solution to all your weight problems. We didn't get this way over night and were not going to get off over night either.

Well I hope this helps, I love my band I would do it over in a minute. I wish you all the best, I've heard it said that "No one ever said this would be easy, Just worth it!" and my favorite saying is "The only easy day was yesterday" Why you ask because yesterday is over.

Much Aloha

Big Wave Dave speaks the truth.

I'm getting banded on Friday, 10/26. The turning point for me was my initial consultation - I committed to myself that I am going to be thin.

It'll be exactly 4 months from my initial consultation to my surgery. Today I weigh 52 lbs less than I did on my initial consultation appointment - all due to diet and exercise, because as Dave points out - the band is a tool - you have to lose the weight through diet and exercise - so I decided to get halfway there before the surgery. I want to improve my odds of having a successful outcome.

I am determined to have an exercise habit I can return to following surgery. I'll be posting again once I'm banded.

Glad we have our own thread. Anybody experience hair loss post banding? I'm very hairy (think missing link) all over my body and I'm wondering if I should expect Hair loss.< /p>

Eric, we have the same surgery date (10/26/2007)...cool.

I've really cut down on the carbs the last couple week and already I'm feeling better. I'm nervous but also excited to have the surgery, can't imagine how I'll feel when I drop about 80lbs.

I'm have lost 72Lbs. and you will feel great! I don't know if you take High Blood Pressure Meds. If you do and when you get off those meds and they get out of your system and THINGS (do make draw a picture) start to wake up again, you will feel like your 25 again. Enjoy the ride brother, it feels great to be our age and moving, exercising and living life to the fullest again. I got another 78 till my goal, can't wait.

Aloha

How it has been is great. Only a bit of pain right after surgery. Some sorness for a week , but that is it. I love my band. It has helped me to make better choices and not to over eat. I am an emotional eater and an extreme overeater. The band is a help. Each person is different and will lose weight at a different rate, but it works.

Good luck to you ,

Bob

Hey Big Wave Dave,

Thanks for the reply. Yep, on BP medication (Lotrel). LOL on the "THINGS (do make draw a picture) start to wake up again"....I hear ya! That alone will be worth loosing a bunch of weight. Hope to get off the BP meds and off the sleep apnea maching. That thing is a pain in the....

You are doing great with 72lbs down. Good to hear the success stories. I know it's going to work but I really do have a hard time picturing myself down at a normal weight.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
