For Just Us Guys

Recommended Posts

I've enjoyed the guys-only posts and wish to you the club.

What OUSooner (Neal) has accomplished in 9 months is phenomenal. He is indeed a new human being and I applaud his determination, dedication and spunk to get the weight off. He's a poster boy and an idol for all of us. Way to go Neal. We admire and envy you.

Life has changed so much for me in so many ways since I was banded. Each and every day is a blessing now. I wake up each morning and am grateful for my band, my protector, my buddy, my keeper, my tool in the lifelong struggle against my demon, food. Why the band works so well remains a mystery to me, but what I do know is that it affects me not just physiologically by restricting my intake, but psychologically as well, affecting my desire to eat. Food is good, food is fun, food is tasty, don't get me wrong; that desire will likely never go away, but food isn't the obsession it used to be.

So, with 5 months under my belt (down 8 inches, BTW) and another 5 to go to get the my goal weight of 225, I feel I have enough experience to say to those of you either considering being banded or actually in the pre-op stages, focus on your future and bear down. There's a huge reward awaiting you when you're banded, if you're willing to make the commitment to yourself. I've been there, I've done that, I have the freaking t-shirt (well, I did, but it's 2 sizes too large now). You will be amazed at the difference.

Off my soapbox now; just happy to have a forum in which to spout off.

You guys are my motivation! Congratulations to Neal, NowNotSoBigGuy, and Jack on being close to your goals! Keep posting!

A month ago, I started preop at 288. This AM, I'm happilly banded (1/31) and weigh 258, about 25% of the way to my goal of 170. I'm able to do 90% of what I need to do on the job. Port still let's me know I had surgery recently.

Sure, it's a lot of money (self pay), the liquid diet sucks (mushies not much better), and there are some concerns, but I'm beginning to realize that THIS IS the best investment I have ever made!

Stand strong brothers!

I was banded in Washington state by Dr Earl Fox. I thought about going to TJ, but couldn't take the time off (business owner). Even though I wasn't at work for two days, I could check in. The third and fourth days post op, I did go in for awhile (was bored at home).

Did you like Dr Kuri? Sure heard lots of great things.

It's a great idea to have our own thread; reminds me of a childhood treehouse where the boys could go to get away from the dreaded girls (just kidding ladies, I know you're lurking out there).

Yes, Jack should write a book; he is the ultimate wordsmith. I always find wisdom and humor in his prose. We should elect Jack chief-poo-bah of the guy's only thread. Anyone second that motion?

Boy I feel dumb,:kiss My wife has been asking me when I will go on the full mushie stage and I said it will be this coming Sunday. I have been doing real good with my liquid faze but I have been getting real hungry for the last few days.:hungry: I could drink something like my shake and about 30min later I get hungry, so I drink Water. I just can't wait for Sunday to get some food that I can chew.:) Here's the dumb part I counted the days wrong , I don't have to wait till Sunday:omg: I could have started on this last Tuesday..So tonight I had about 1/4 cup of tuna casserole, and it filled me up and I'm still full 2hr later..:clap2: It's good to here that you all are doing great so far..

Okay guys...another girl invading. After reading all 14 pages, I want to comment on two subjects that were brought up.

1) Ratio of women vs. men getting Lap-Band. From what I remember from my research, approximately 70% of Lap-Band patients are women, which makes only 30% men. I beleive this is due to women "typically" taking more of an interest/concern in their overall health situation.

2) Increased libido after weight loss. This is purely a psychological thing. As we loose weight, our self confidence increases, whether we recongnize this or not. I, as well as many other female bandsters, feel the same way after we loose just a few pounds.

Just thought I would stop in and say hi and give you my input on two of your topics. I admire you all and actually find your thread more informative than many of the other threads on LBT. You all are just more open and ask questions straight out with out beating around the bush!

You guys are ALL doing great. For those of you in your early stages of this journey, hang in there; it will ALL be worth it in a few months.

Steph

The ladder's up and the sentry is posted. We're going to have to start checking people using the Crocodile Dundee method!

I just plugged my numbers into the BMI chart. I'm no longer Morbidly Obese (I started out with a 43 BMI).

Have a great weekend!

I got to be real honest. If my Libido gets higher after a 100 pounds weight loss....I may look for a younger Woman to have me some kids--besides me having two that I am raising now. Being a Single Dad does have it's advantages. On the other hand about percentages--I see that the same thing is going on in the "St Francis Bariatric Center of Memphis, TN"--70% Women and 30% Men are getting all three types of surgical weight loss done. It's a shame that Men lose their lives from something that can now be fixed.

"Oh--I was serious about having maybe 2 more kids". I have been friends to a few Filipino Girls who is looking to start a family. I smile at the idea. Who knows--maybe I can be a great Father--even though I am going to be 50 in June. My Libido is kind of low now, but every now and then--I have some rough days and nights--so I know it's there-I have to be thankful a cold shower works 80% of the time-My Body just waiting for me step out of this old one into the new Me :clap2: in 08....

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
