A Little Confused About Sugar?

Recommended Posts

OK....I know to never drink any sweet Fruit Drinks over 5 g of sugar. And I know alot of people have dumped on OJ because its so extremely high in sugar, but can you have a few segments of fresh orange? If that's possible then can't people have a few ounces of fresh juice from the orange? Just wondering because I recently bought some grapefruit without thinking if it was naturally too sugary or if the fruit itself is OK .......just not the processed juice the store sells? Any thoughts?

I haven't had my surgery yet and used to drink OJ every day. Tropicana makes a 50% less sugar and calories OJ. Not sure how much is in it but it's a HUGE difference.

I was also told stay away from anything acidic

I had a conversation about sugar yesterday with my nutritionist as I'm concerned about dumping. Generally natural sugars are much more tolerated. So juices/foods with no sugar added are usually safer. Big thing is to avoid concentrated sugars. With that being said... She also said everyone is different so what may trigger dumping in me may not effect you.

I think like vamp said all we can do is try! I'm only 3 weeks post op so I'm still a bit too scared to try anything.

Good luck!

There's a really cool app (or website) www.calorieking.com that will give you information about food's nutritional value. I've used it many times. It pretty lists evert thing you can imagine to eat, restaurants included. I was told 15 grams of sugar max. Funny the different stories from different doctors.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
