Diabetes Postop Cure Or Not

Recommended Posts

I am going for this for the possible diabetes cure. My cardiologist is very positive about this surgery and tells me it is the only cure we have for diabetes.

Any comments from any preop type 2 diabetics on their postop cure successes would be very

I am taking 100 to 150 units or more of insulin along with pills and still have an A1C of 8.2 and I know it is just a matter before the really bad things start to happen.

My BMI is 41 along with sleep apnea, reflux, heart disease pace maker, hypertension, renal insufficiency, plus the burning feet and am hoping for some help from

The surgery.

Thanks

I too have diabetes, sleep apnea, and a heart condition called prolong qt syndrome. Since my surgery, my diabetes has gone into remission. The doc says it appears that my blood sugar is that of a normal person. Before meals it runs about 80 to 90 and raises to 110 after meals. It is such a relief to not have to worry about the diabetes anymore. Before my blood sugar could get over 200 even on a strict diet and stay that way for hours after. I had my surgery April 3rd...so I haven't had my a1c rechecked yet. I am curious to see how much better it is. This is the main reason I had the surgery...so the relief of not having to deal with it anymore ...not having to take anything for it anymore....is worth it's weight in gold. In fact my doc said after another month of normal sugars...I will not have to check my sugars any, ore. Yay! Good luck and hope this helped.

Thanks for that reply. Where did you have yours done?

Same story for me - type 2 (diagnosed three months prior to my decision to pursue the surgery option and one of the major factors in my deciding to have the surgery), heart disease, hypertension and high cholesterol (under control pre-op with Lipitor). I was never on insulin but was on Metformin.

I'm 28 weeks post-op today and 103.5 lbs lighter. Diabetes - gone and off the Metformin within two weeks of the surgery. Hypertension - gone and off the Ramipril within two weeks of the surgery. Cholesterol - under 100 but Lipitor is such an amazing med that I will probably be on for life.

Do the research. I think you'll find there is no better, more effective treatment for diabetes known to medical science than RNY. And there are a lot of other pretty great things associated with losing a hundred pounds or more!!

So. California - both the surgery group and the hospital are Certified Centers of Excellence. PM me if you're interested and I'd be glad to give you all the scoop.

I will have mine done at Lexington Medical Center outside Columbia, SC. They also have all those certifications and have done several thousand operations.

The surgeon is Glenn Strickland, he has an excellent rep.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
