I am getting the bypass done on Tuesday. I chose it because the Lap band extends and you probably wouldn't lose as much.

Good luck and the band gives less results bacause it is only shrinking ur stomach where as the gastric is actually changing the way ur body will absorb the food.

My surgeon didn't recommend the lap band cuz it slips & he had many patients with issues & refuse to deal with that. Gastric bypass is long term & more weight lost so I went with the gastric bypass.

I know alot of people have had success with the band but I am not one of them. Some long term studies now are showing a failure rate as high as 75%. I don't have any thing nice to say about it myself. Initially, I did great but the last almost 2 years now has been a struggle. Lots of reflux and dilatation. Currently awaiting revision to rny which I should have had in the first place. I feel I will have a greater success with this and actually reach goal which I couldn't with the band. I know my surgeon is doing more revisions now and said he prolly won't be doing bands in a few years. My employment is requiring me to switch programs and the new surgeon doesn't even do the band at all. It's a tough decision. Just make sure you are fully informed.

Hey all,

I am a lapbander soon to have RNY. I had my Lapband in 2008 weighing 127kgs (280lbs) and it slipped last July. I was initially very successful losing 56kgs (135lbs) and nearly halving my body weight. I had a few issues like gallstones etc, but after my gallbladder was removed in 2010, things with my band got worse. As they began to re-adjust my fills, I suffered from terrible reflux and had no restriction. After suffering for a few months, a barium swallow showed up a dilated pouch and slipped band. It's been nearly 12months since my diagnosis and I'm weighing in over 300lbs and I'm am scheduled for revision RNY surgery on the 25th of May.

I must say I agree with what others have posted, the problem with the Lapband is the weight doesn't appear to stay off long term. I reckon that 70-80% of all of the people I know with Lapbands have had to go for repair, replace or new WLS operations. I personally wish I never got the band, it was trouble from the start, and to see such success and gain the weight back is heart breaking. I think the only reason I did chose the lapband was because I was only 20yrs old at the time and not ready to commit to a permanent fix. Now nearly 4yrs on, I look forward to my RNY surgery and hope that the restriction with the added malabsortion technique will work for me to get the kilos off. I'm sick of fighting my weight.

I wish you all the luck with making your decision, the best advice I give is RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH! I guess if I knew some of the things I know now I may have taken a different path.

:) Jacee

I originally wanted the band but I think I'm going to go with bypass. Is the scar really big? Is the recovery time long?

I'm kinda scared of major surgery as I've never even been hospitalized...

As long as you are getting in done laparoscopically the scars arent big. I've had Lapband and my gallbladder out laparoscopically and my scars are minimal, my RNY is also going to be laparoscopically :)

I've been hearing a lot of awful stuff about the lap band. My Dr said they may do away with that procedure altogether over the next few yrs. The gastric bypass has the most successful results. Have you considered The Gastric sleeve? Its in between them both

I'm personally not a fan of the gastric sleeve. I've heard too many cases of stretched stomachs. Plus it has a bigger staple line so has higher chance of leaks and infections.

However I do know a lot of people who have been sucessful with it. So I guess you should definitely research it as well as the Lapband and bypass.

Another factor for me, with already have a Lapband, if you go sleeve you have to wait 3months between them taking out the band and doing the sleeve due to scar tissue. With bypass it's all in the same op, band out and bypassed :)

For me personally, I didn't want anything foreign in my body. There are to many risks with your body rejecting foreign objects. Plus from all the research I did, like everyone else said, the success rate with the RNY is so much better. Do your research, ask many questions and write down the pros & cons of each for yourself. Unfortunate noone can make the decision for you, but the more educated you are about each process whatever choice you make will be the right choice for you!! Good Luck!

I had gbp 8 years ago and have maintained my weight loss so far i was in my 20's when i had it and was 270 on the day of surgery i am now 148 and have had a child post op. The ryb not only make you stomach small but also doesnt allow ur body to asorb all the calories u eat which is why the weight loss is quicker and last longer. It changes your whole was of living esp if you really enjoy large meals with family. Doing the research is key to being a sucess. They are some long term issues that can occur such as Iron def and so on. Remeber that you that fact that you can asorb as many caleries as you eat is great but part of that is you Protein, vit and so on. You can lose and alot of weight but also lose hair. You can also restrech ur pouch if you drink soda to soon or force food in. It is life changing but worth it.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
