Med Alert Tag - Do You Or Will You Wear One After Surgery?

Recommended Posts

I'm curious if anyone post surgery wears a medical alert Bracelet or necklace to let EMTs and Emergency Room docs know not to blindly incubate? I've seen them online but, folks that have had the surgery at work aren't wearing them. Anyone's doctors recommend them?

Hello!

I'm planning to buy one, but I'm curious to know what's the purpose of it? Did you meant blindly intubation? Pls if you could let me know what's the important purpose of having one of this Medical Alert Bracelet? Thanks!

They say you should have one so that if you're unable to talk after an accident or other incident the EMT can read it and know about the surgery. It should say you've had RNY/Gastric bypass and DO NOT blindly incubate. You don't want them to do it blindly because they could miss your air way and go into your stomach and keep pushing the tubing down. That can cause issues because you now have a pouch not a full size stomach. SAme with pumping your stomach...they need to know you have a pouch not a full stomach.

I plan on getting one.

I believe you can order them through your pharmacy, you can find them online and there is another place called Laurens Hope. With Laurens Hope you get the tag but, you can change around the Bracelet part. I bought one for myself when I had the lapband but, I can't use that one after the RNY surgery...who different ball game so I'll have to get a new one.

LosingItForMe thanks for mentioning Lauren's Hope. I had surgery May 30th and was concerned about emergency medical personnel being aware of my gastric bypass and not doing the right thing. I ordered a braceler - quite cute also ! After reading your post. It has already put my mind at ease.

Glad to help Dmariesc....she does make some pretty ones. Once you have the tag you can change out the jewelry part too. That part I like. I'm going to order one once I have a permanent surgery date (it was 6/6 but, with insurance issues I believe it's being moved to 7/11). Then I'm going to try to make my own replacement jewelry/bracelet parts.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
