What Do You Tell People?

Recommended Posts

Its okay. I known for years that she can be a B*. I should have expected that anyways. She thinks I sit on my ass all day and eat. :0/

Most people think that's what diabetics do, that's why they have Diabetes. I exercise and eat right as best as I can right now, but I can't wait for surgery.

I wish I'd never told my dad or step mom. Lol. Or my personal trainer. Lol. Bc they all look down on me' date=' like im 5 yrs old, being accused of doing something bad. The fist thing my step mom said was, omg!! That surgery is dangerous! You will probably die, bc of your diabetes.

And that is a big reason why I don't want to go there. Of course surgery is always a cause for concern, but either way we need support. My husband is scared, but thankfully supportive. I have no need to tell anyone else. I probably won't even tell my kids.

Hey All,

I told everyone after my Lapband and have told everyone about getting it revised to RNY bypass. Intitially I hated when people judged me by my decision, but I've now come to realize that who gives a crap what they think, it's my journey, my decision and as long as I'm happy with it, who cares what others think.

Be so open about my Lapband and Weightloss actually inspired a fair few of my friends to get on the bandwagon and either get the surgery themselves or start changing their lives and losing weight. I've been in a magazine and on the tv talking about my journey. Here I will post the links to share with you all :)

Here's also a video I made of my lapband journey, it's not working on my iPad, but it should still be playable

I agree with many of the others, Tell them your eating right and smaller portions and exercising BUT I'm on the other end of the spectrum. Since my very first visit with my family doctor I have been using Facebook and telling all my friends every step of my journey. I have not had the sugery yet, It should be in september but I have lost 55lbs so far just by cutting back my portions and eating the right stuff. I want to encourage others out there That really need it and are afraid. I've been asked if I was afraid what could happen if I got this done and I always say....No, I'm afraid what might happen if I DON"T get it done. Also I found out that so many of my Facebook friends had it done and it's like our own little support group now. So I'm very open about everything. But you will know what to say when they ask. Good luck!

Agree with you. What will happen if I don't have it done? I have decided to take a break from FB and take my time getting my priorities and goals set up b4 surgery.

I do have a FB page dedicated to my hard work over the past 2 years. And I love sharing my life with others, but its best NOT to share right b4 surgery, bc that's where u get the most negativity.

At first I felt the same way. But with help from my therapist and MD I realize that my withholding information had a lot to do with me feeling ashamed. I realize now that I have a medical disease no different than cancer heart disease and that traditional diets no longer work for the majority once u reach the morbidly obese stage. I have really come a long way in shedding the shame and I have been completely astonished and humbled at the outpouring of support I have received. Several people have told me how proud they are of me that I love myself enough to take this step to take care of myself. And that made me realize that not taking care of myself contributed a lot to why I am here now. So own it girl. Be proud.

I too don't want to tell many people. especially people at work. They are all trim and I've heard remarks about how one coworker feels about people that have the surgery, so my mouth is shut! One girl st work knows cause she had it too but I told her not to say anything. Half my family knows, the other half thinks surgery is for lazy ppl so I haven't told them. The best thing is my boyfriend not only knows but supports me 100% no matter what, so that does my heart good.

Big thing, I belong to body by vi, weightloss shakes. Lots of ppl on my team losing hundreds if pounds with it, so I feel horrible going to surgery and don't want to tell them a thing, yet I fear they will think its the body by vi and start asking questions....I'm so annoyed ppl have the nerve to think surgery is an easy way out and making us feel badly for doing it when the only ready way out is not getting ur weight in control no matter what method, that's what's easy, not this!

It has been interesting to see the responses, and i really appreciate the support I've found here. I've realized by seeing these responses, that I'm not as concerned about how people respond, or what they think, so much as I'm just a very private person, and would never really talk to people about any of these things. I guess I would reframe this conversation some, and ask, if you aren't telling people what you did, what did you say when asked about how you lost the weight? Has anyone out-right just lied, and said it was "surgery" without saying what type? I'm not advocating dishonesty, but I'm curious. One of the only people I know who did this told me she had stomach cancer, but I'm very sure she didn't. I suspect that more people do have bypass and don't disclose that they had surgery, not that I think they owe an explanation to anyone.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
