Hello all, my name is Sam. Glad this forum was recommended to me. :huggie:

I had my surgery on January 9, and things have been going very well, I think, except for one thing. But first, the good: I lost 21 pounds in five days, and have yet to re-weihgt myself since the 15th. My knees and ankles don't hurt anymore, I don't snore anymore, I haven't had any indigestion at all since the surgery, and I don't wake up 3-4 times per night to use the bathroom. I sleep straight through since I don't know when! The one thing bothering me is that I am constantly hungry. I eat the amount of food prescribed by my doctor, and it does fill up my pouch, but the stomach below the pouch growls continually. So I'm full up top, and hungry down below! Does anyone experience this? Will this go away?? I don't feel like having constant hunger pains for the rest of my life. The band was supposed to take care of that, I thought. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Sam, You are just 3 weeks out of surgery. Your stomach is still healing. Your body is going through big changes. Indigestion is gone..sleeping through the night ...good things. Try Protein Drinks that might help or what about creamed Soups that really filled me up. Keep the faith but don't be miserable. What are you allowed to eat? It could be a mental thing too. food addicts that we all are..

Congrats on you success! I am getting banded in April, and am currently doing all the preop stuff and personal research (this is a great site)! I am curious about your hunger feelings. I hope you continue to post and hope even more that your hunger pangs go away. The reason I am overweight is because I am always hungry. This is the first time I've heard of anyone saying that their lower stomach felt empty. Keep us posted! Good Luck and God Bless!

Pamela

Hi Samuel, I had the same thing with the hunger. It goes away a bit after you start getting fills. The stomach sensors are close to the band so when it tightens it gives you a full feeling. You should see that happen with a fill or 2. Best of luck.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
