Had my appointment with my surgeon yesterday. My surgery date is April 23rd. I start my pre-op diet on April 9th. I'm able to have Protein shakes, sf Jello, broth and veggies. This is gonna be a struggle because I'm really not a veggie eater which isn't good.Im gonna make it work because after all of them doctors appointment I can't quit now. I'm so excited and nervous at the same time. My family is very supportive and I have you guys. So I will be fine.

Hi, I have been on my pre-op diet since Saturday last and have lost 10 Ibs. Just on Protein Drinks 4 times a day and a couple of apples and have found it much easier than expected. I was offered similar to you, i.e. veg etc but decided no, I would keep in simple by keeping myself right out of the kitchen. I thought I would really struggle but perhaps my brain has simply said I can't cheat because if I cheat even once then my liver will expand and I may delay the surgery I have so looked forward to. It isn't worth it. Good luck and be strong.

Thanks Tor. I love apples. I think I'm gonna get some. I don't plan on cheating either because we've come too far.

berniec - I never liked veggies either and still have a hard time with most but, you know what's worked for me of all things? Grilling or roasting the veggies. ON the grill I LOVE asparagus..I pick the ones that are very thin, snap off the bottoms, spray them with an olive oil filled spritzer and put garlic powder and a little salt. Then lay them on the grill and cook them well. I like them a little charred so you see the lines. YUMMY. I do the same thing with eggplant, peppers, zucchini and squash. Give it a whirl.

In the oven I use the same olive oil spritzer, garlic powder and a little salt on turnips and roast them. Yummmm. I never in my life thought I'd eat those white and purple things :)

That's right! Remember when you cheat you only cheat your self.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
