I'm new here...

I'm 29 yo, single mother of a 6 yo boy, chef and manager of a large scale dining facility.

I recently had surgery for a herniated disc in my low back. The back surgeon told me after the surgery that he was going to recommend me for bariatric surgery in his surgical report. I was surprised and delighted by his recommendation. I also spoke with my regular physican about it and she also agreed that I was an ideal candidate for the surgery. She did the paperwork and faxed it off to the insurance. I recently received the ore-approval letter from the insurance company. To get final approval I have to lose 5% of my current weight, which is 15.5 pounds. I also have to come up with $1,450 to pay for a mandatory nutritional service that monitors you for 1 year after surgery. Until I meet these to requirements, I cannot get an appointment with a surgeon.

How do I lose 15+ pounds in roughly 5 weeks? Coming up with the $1,450 is also going to be a bit of a challenge, but I am more worried about losing the weight! I would ideally like to have the surgery before the end of July, so i have time to recover before work gets hectic in September.

Any ideas?

Thank you in advance!

Hi Drea

Sorry to hear you are having issues with insurance. As for the weightloss, you might try the 2week liquid diet. I know it isn't fun, but I have lost 9 lbs in 8 days.

I agree. That's an awful fast turnaround to lose 15 pounds. Your best shot is going to be either a VERY low (30 gram) carb diet with a calorie cap (probably 1000), or something like Shakeology. The hospital here has a similar "shake-based" diet available. Have you checked to see if there is something similar available to you through the hospital?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
