I got gastric bypass on march 6 2012 so I'm just a little post op but when I did my psych eval the dr wasn't to keen on me getting the surgery I'm 28 but I'm depressed she did in the end approve. I told her did u ever thing that I'm depressed cause I'm so big . If course she was about 125 lbs and had nothing to say back. My suggestion to u is just make sure ur ready to do this is a big descison to make but I will say I wish I wouldn't have waited so Long and gained so much more weight just remember u have to do the diet for life or u could gain back the weight. I wish u best of luck !!!

I told him that it was because of my weight and he argued that it would not make me as depressed as the test showed I was. My weight is the only thing holding me back. I am 280 lbs. I am ready to lose. I go for my surgeon visit tuesday.

I hear ya there I'm 28 5'4 and well now I'm down to 290 but I was 321 when I started the pre-op. I do think it should be ur. Choice in the end just make sure u do everything the doctor says and prove them wrong :)

Well what I would do is see a different psychologist. If you don't like the first answer get a second opinion. You can for everything else these days. Lol. Just make sure that you know deep down that you are dedicated to the process. It's hard! Not one second is easy at first and you have to have discipline, be focused, an determined to get it right. Know this will be one of the hardest things, yet rewarding things u will go through in your life, and if u can except this then u are ready! I wish u luck. Please keep us updated!

Hi! I was in a similar situation. I saw a psychiatrist and did not get cleared over miscmmunicatipn with his intern. My surgeon would not give me a date so I got a new surgeon and his psychiatrist cleared me for surgery. I am now waiting to get my date. It kind of sucked BC I lost my 400 dollar program fee with my first surgeon but now I'm about to get a date so I don't think about money lost. I say if you don't get cleared get a new psych evaluation and don't be so honest and open about your feelings. If you feel you are strong enough to do this show them that and don't focus on how bad the weight is making you feel. Talk to someone on the side about that. They mainly want to see you are mentally stable enough for surgery. Put a smile on and I hate to say this and it's probably bad advise but lie lie lie your way if you have to. I hope this helps a little even if it just makes you smile :)

When I decided I wanted a bypass I went to see my gp who referred me to see the bariactric surgeon, I had my appointment with him, he asked me a few questions, (I was in his room about 10mins if that) I had blood test and swabs before I left. I emailed him that night to say I wanted to go ahead with procedure and he emailed me back with possible dates. So from when I saw my gp to the actual date I had the surgery (26th jan 2012) it was less than 2 months. I had no diet to follow before hand to lose weight the only thing I had was a 2 week liver reduction diet right before my surgery :-) xx

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
