Have I Made My Final Decision?

Recommended Posts

Hello! I am new to this board. I have a dilemma - I originally started this whole process of wls to do the sleeve. But . . . when I went in last week for my preop, my surgeon kinda suggested RNY, because I have significant GERD/reflux. I am a bit nervous as to what to do. He says he'll still do sleeve if that's what I want, but he will do RNY if I chose. I am 90 lbs overweight, that's what Dr says, he says I'll get better weightloss with RNY. But, I'm nervous about RNY. Any advice? I have to choose by MAR 16, my preop. my surgery is scheduled for MAR 28. HELP, :-)

First, welcome to the group!!! I'm not sure I'm best suited to answer your question, but I'm always willing to give my opinion or my experience. When I first made my descision I choose the sleeve, but when I got to the surgeon, that all changed. Well first my insurance didn't cover the sleeve, so that was out of the question, 2nd, I was doing the surgery to help with my diabetes, and I found out that the RNY does a better job with that then the sleeve, also I had reflex and it is completely cured now. Well I think so, because I'm still on nexium, so not sure. After researching RNY and all the positive feed back, there was no question I was sold. With the option of the sleeve out of the question and just the descision of whether to get RNY or not it was an easy one. But with u having to choose, my best advice is to look at as many websites for both and then decide. What scares you about RNY? Well I'm sure I wasn't much help but hopefully someone else will come along and be able to help. Good luck!!

Thanks diddle 106. I have done a lot of research about RNY since my appointment. I think I am pretty settled on having RNY instead of sleeve. I wasn't so sure about RNY and the lifelong changes required. But, I am now ready to make those changes and be healthy! My kids need me to make those changes and I am ready and excited to begin my new life!

Hello Tx

I just came back from my information night and they basically stated the sleeve is available but, most insurances don't pay for it and because of the staples used, there is a high risk of ulcers and bleeding. They do do tests to make sure the bleeding doesn't happen but, they said just like a staple when stapling paper sometimes they don't close all the way. They also said there isn't long enough studies on the sleeve for them to give info more than 5-6 years out like they can with the lapband or RNY. So with that, they think the RNY is the better surgery because of the results they already know. Just what I learned today anyway. I was already set on the RNY after having had the lapband already. I just know for me I need the malabsorbtion to help me get to my goal. Definitely do your research and I wish you the best with your surgery.

Thanks LosingIt. . . I have made my decision, I am going to do the RNY. I know I will have better Lifelong results with RNY. Fortunately, my insurance will pay for either procedure, but I feel like I will get better longterm results with RNY.

Txsmama,

You mentioned doing it for your kids, how old? I know what you mean. I have a little girl, she will be three in April. My daughter has a physical disability and so she needs help to crawl through the play land at McDonald's. One of my goals is to be able to fit so I can help her make it all the way through. Just the added energy to be able to keep up with her is another goal for me. Goodluck on your journey and your right your kids need you to be healthy so stay focused, you will do awesome!!!

Hi Diddle,

My kids are 7,5 and 18months. My husband is very supportive as well. He will have to take care of our 18 month old son, since I can't lift him for 1 month. I feel like I am finally doing something for me, and everyone else in my family will benefit too. I have had to convince my husband that the RNY is the right way to go, but he is onboard with the decision. And is super supportive, I know I couldn't do this without his support!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
