Drinking while Eating

Recommended Posts

So from what I understand, drinking while eating will result in making you eat more and more often... But if I'm just a few days/weeks out of surgery, isn't it ok that I would eat while drinking, which would cause me to eat more, which would allow me to finally get all my Protein in? I'm really struggling to get my protein in, I haven't been able to get more than 30grams in a day... How do I do it?

My goal is to get in 60 gr of Protein and 600 cal in a day at the end of 3 weeks. It is difficult now, but later it will not be (or so I have read). The purpose of following the no eating and drinking together rule now is to make it a lifetime habit.

When you are on liquids, it doesn't matter. When you start food, though, don't do it. One, it can cause you to eat too much, as you know. For me, the liquid comes back up (yecch) so I don't dare do it. I wait a good hour before drinking. If you aren't getting your Protein in, you have to choke down Protein Drinks. I know it's nasty and you are sick of them, but you gotta do it. There are all sorts of posts here on how to improve the taste, different brands to try, etc. Good luck!

Eating while drinking? That's just crazy talk! :-P My own experience at 2 weeks post op, I could not eat but a few tablespoons of food a day - so I didn't worry about getting all that Protein in.

I just did my best to stay hydrated, and as long as I felt okay, I wasn't worried about it. I never asked my doc about it, but I don't think it is reasonable to expect post-op patients to be able to get in the recommended amounts of Protein so soon after surgery.

Drinking while eating or too soon after eating has caused sliming and puking for me.

I cannot eat without drinking. At this stage, if I have to eat every 2 hours, because I dared to sip - then so beit. I'll keep on chomping.

Hmmm. Ok. Thanks! So is it safe to assume that no one here was able to get all the Protein in during week 1-2 post op?

dr's say not to drink while eating because you may miss a lot of the nutrients from your foods. It passes through you too fast, thus leading to more eating.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
