When did you start soft foods?

Recommended Posts

I was curious about different times people start soft foods after surgery. I'm 10days out and still on full liquids....

The general consensus is soft foods at around 3-4ish weeks.

I am 12 days out and cannot start soft until week three.....and I think the only part I will like is there is more "substance" and variety.....so tired of soup!!

Puree after 4 weeks, soft after 6 weeks & then start introducing regular foods at 9 weeks.

Pretty much immediately - scrambled eggs and yogurt (along with the typical juices and broths) in the hospital followed at home by experimenting progressively (under plan - try new things one at a time to test for tolerance) with other soft things like oatmeal, softer cheeses, progressively less strained Soups, Peanut Butter, tuna progressing to dark chicken, etc.

I wow that's impressive that you had that in the hospital... The closest thing to food I had was a Protein enriched jello! And Peanut Butter? !? I still haven't been cleared for peanut butter...

My biggest advice is to check with your surgeon and nutritionist... Every doctor's plan is different and can even vary from patient to patient...

Stage 1 Days 3-17 full liquid diet

Stage 2 Days 17 - 30 pureed (anything you can suck through a straw)

Stage 3 Week 4 soft food/regular diet

BTW I'm on day 12 but I had some sugar free Jello and I felt just fine.

I hope this helps.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
