New to Forum; Going through Pre-op

Recommended Posts

Hi all. . . I am brand new to the board. I am in the pre-op stage here in Charlotte, NC. My doctor is Dr. Vollenger at Southeast Bariatrics. He is really great about letting you know what to expect. The pre-op work with him is very extensive. He has a psyc, exercise and nutrition specialist. You meet with them and email them weekly with your goals and how you accomplished them. It is great because he doesn't look at the WLS as an easy fix. He makes you work hard to make lifestyle changes before, so you can be more successful after. I don't know when my sugery will be, probably late spring, early summer. Any words of wisdom?

Hi stac1982, welcome to the forum. I was banded about a week ago so I'm pretty new also. I don't know much about your situation so I don't have a lot of specific words of wisdom. I guess the only thing I can really say is, spend as much time as you can reading the posts on this forum, past and present. You'll learn a tremendous amount and, after a while, you'll be able to focus in on your own specific questions. You'll probably find that many other people have had the same questions, and you'll get a lot of good information from people who have been there.

Best wishes on your journey.

With all of that, you will be totally mentally ready and use the band, which is a tool, in the right way and have success!

You still have to make good choices, exercise, etc but it is just a lot easier being banded, since you can not physically eat past a certain point. Congrats on your journey!!!

Hi all!

I was banded in Knoxville,Tennessee on 12-18-2006. I weighed 255 and now weight 231. I will get my first fill on 2-2-06. I was astonished by all the burpies and flatulence after surgery. I also didn't expect to come out of surgery so BLOATED. Seems this is a side affect of laproscopic surgery. I was a terrible pre-surgery patient. My physician wanted me to lose 10% prior to surgery and I couldn't! I also wouldn't! I'm an emotional eater and I knew that if I did not get insurance approval that it was probably going to be a no go since I have 2 girls starting college.

My biggest wisdom is...even being banded takes WILLPOWER. You don't get to eat alot of the things you could but the reality is...one can still eat. I have still had hunger pains but not as severe as pre band. If you think that all of a sudden you don't want food...that is simply untrue.

If you ever want to ask a question...feel free to e-mail me! Take care!

Hi, welcome to the forum. I love my band. Just know that it is a tool. I am a slow loser as I have lost 43 lbs in 7.5 months. I would live without my band though. I can honestly say it has been the easiest 43 lbs I have ever lost. Good luck with your surgery.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
